The GTO failed so lets use the SAME formula on an even uglier car and put SS badges on it. The american public will never know!!!
Why dont we bastardize the engine out of an american legend the Corvette cheapen its significance and put it into any turd we can fit the engine in. Sounds like a great idea. True enthusists wont mind!
I can imagine whats next: Chevy Express Van SS now with LS2!
Nothing wrong except that they killed off the camaro for the GTO expecting to do well. They failed miserabaly from a business standpoint the GTO is discontinued and now they use the same formula on an uglier car.
The fact that they use the same motor in the afformentioned cars bastardizes and cheapens the significance of the LS2 as a corvette powerplant.
This is the stupidest way to run a business hence the proverbial retarded hamster synonym. They are literally shooting themselves in the foot point blank with a purposeful well aimed deliberate shotgun slug.
If this stategic business stupidity keeps going GM will become a division of toyota and all thier plants will be converted into the production of toyota camrys.
Dont get me wrong… There is nothing wrong with the concept of the car.
BUT busness wise GM really needs to pull itself out from a ditch instead of working on pet projects. Spending resources on a similar concept based on a concept that did not do too well (GTO) when GM is in financial trouble is very stupid.
Using the same formula they used in the 1960’s WILL NOT work in 2006. In the 1960’s the american auto maker was king. They had the resources to do what they pleased. And they came out with some awesome cars back then.
However this is no longer the case. The american automaker is no longer king… they are seeing red and thier focus should be on the production of what works until they can put some capital away for the production of truely awesome cars in the future not just hodged up sedans.
I don’t really see the problem with that. A lot, well probably every, car manufacturer keeps the cost of R&D and production down by sharing parts and designs across platforms. I mean, look at Nissan and the VQ35 or Subaru and the EJ25. Both great engines and both found in grocery getters and sports cars.
Besides, why are you all hyped up over one concept car being spotted on the streets? They could just have one on hand from Holden and somebody took it for a spin. Has GM announced this as the next great thing or something?
How exactly are they wasting money and resources by driving a car around Detroit that is built and already sold in other parts of the world? Its not like they spent three years developing this car to bring to market here. Same thing with the GTO. As big of a flop as the GTO was, its not like they wasted years of R&D on it. GMs real flops are all their FWD sedans that were designed for this market and that are built like shit and sit on dealer lots for months and months.
Right, because the way to get ahead in a highly competitive market is to sit on your laurels doing the same old thing, not taking calculated risks to bring innovative new products and technologies to market first. :bloated:
Maybe GM should take a good hard look at what they were doing in the '60’s. Success leaves clues. They were doing something right then. Yeah, they didn’t have Japanese competition but they did have competition. Stuffing big motors into 4 door sedans created the muscle car era. Why not try it again? It seems to be working for Daimler-Chrysler. They seem to be doing pretty well following the current modern rebirth of the muscle car era by putting a strong FI 4 cylinder in their base economy car (Cobalt-SS/SC, Impreza-WRX, Lancer-EVO, Neon-SRT4…), the publicity and image from these high-powered cars in turn drives sales of the base models. Why not examine other trends?
As previously pointed out, unless there’s more to the story than what you showed, driving a car from one of their subsidiaries around Detroit doesn’t mean shit.
They aren’t diluting or bastardizing anything by using a good motor in multiple products. That’s a smart way to keep their costs down, which is exactly what they need to do to survive. It’s not that their cars aren’t selling. Look around. There are new GM’s EVERYWHERE. The problem is that their manufacturing is so bloated by union salaries, materials costs, etc that it’s almost impossible to turn a profit.
You seem to be awfully pissed off that a 4 door sedan with an LSx exists, but maybe you should re-examine your reasoning. You seem to be trying to justify some sort of elitist/jealousy thing.
A: The exchange rate didn’t kill them. It was supposed to sticker at a little under 30k, not 33k+.
B: They called it something other than the GTO.
That second one is what really did it in. There was an instant backlash from the old school muscle car crowd and the car had bad publicity when it launched.
Take a step back and look at the car subjectively as the Pontiac Monaro.
400 HP/400 TQ, stock, with a 6 speed.
0-60 < 5 seconds, 1/4 in the low 13’s.
Style, less boy racer, more sleek coupe.
So maybe a 4 door version, using an name plate that is currently around, would work out better for them.
And the fact that they’re using the LS2… who cares? The Corvette will always be the performance king at GM, for the simple fact that it’s a light two seat coupe. Same engine + a much heavier car will never = the same performance.
i was going to say from the side…the whole side and front of it look like a GTo, only difference i saw was the rear end of it. not to mention i dont really like the back end. i still to this day think the GTO looks great, and had it been named something OTHER than GTO, it would have been a better car.
you guys don’t know what you’re talking about. The Chevy Lumina SS is what they market the monaro/GTO as in european and middle eastern countries, where they don’t have pontiac. They make both 2 and 4 door versions there and australia, always have long before the GTO. There are no plans to bring it here. Its got a manufacturer plate on it, so some GM exec was having a little fun with a 4 door version. If the GTO comes back, it’s going to be off the Camaro platform, about a year later, but slightly bigger, and STILL 2 doors.
