So now that my shit got stolen, Im in the market for a new radar detector. Was wondering what are some of the good ones? If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Let me know what you have and how you like it, etc. I had a $125 Cobra, it wasn’t great, but not bad for the money. Im not looking to spend a ton of money, but I do want something decent that was better than the Cobra I had. Thanks

I’m sure there will be quite a few others that agree. I have the newest one w/ the latest software and I love it. Definitely works and saves/has saved my ass many times. They tend to be pricey though.
With detectors it’s go big, or save yourself the money.

There are only like two radar detectors: V1/8500
Anything else like a $100 WalMart is worthless.
^^ STi…it’s slightly on a lower level than the V1…but above the 8500’s (I think). It’s top 3 for sure.
I love how the V1 shows you where the radar is coming from… verrrrrry nice feature. Also, the concealed display is realllly nice.

I personally use the V1 as well, haven’t been pulled over with it yet.
And it’s completely concealed to the point that you can’t tell it’s in the car from the outside.

I was just reading that the beltronics STi is undetectable by police equipment. But it doesnt have as good of range and is prone to more false alarms than the Passport 9500 and the V1. It is also 500 bucks.

Seriously… go big or go home, only way to do it. Going to walmart and spending 100 bucks on a shitty radar detector is like throwing money down the drain. If you are planning on going over the speed limit or participating in any kind of illegal speed contests… do the math. Lawyer fees + court fees + fines + taking a day off from work to go to court + insurance rates going up. Just trying to help you out man :thumbup

Reputable Ebay sellers or forums, craigslist works as well.
Always ask for the version of the detector of have them give a serial number to it.
Make sure that if you’re paying full price you’re getting the newest version, or if it’s an older one it should be respectively cheaper.
You can type in the serial number on V1 website and they will tell you which version it is for free, and if it’s older, how much the upgrade would cost.
It doesn’t matter if the radar is detectable by the police, they are legal in NY. The only problem with windshield mounted ones, is that a police officer will be severely less likely to let you off if they see a detector or suction cup traces on the windshield (if you tried being sneaky and took it off before he got to the window), I’ve talked with many cops and that is the general consensus between them.
However if you have a quality detector
- Odds are you won’t have to worry about being pulled over for speeding
- You can get a remote indicator which will allow you to hide you detector by the roof liner. This will do two things, one it will help deter theft, because it won’t be visible. Two it won’t be visible to officers either.

They are pricey for a reason. The ghetto Cobras are worthless.
