Radar detectors. And me bitching.

Allright. At the tender age of 27 i should know better than to get a speeding ticket. Fucked up part is that in the last 3 years i have got more speeding tickets than i ever had in my teen years. Oh ya and i used to street race regularly back than and speed everywhere. My theory as to why Im getting so many is because i often commute out side of City areas. I work in Lancaster So i often pass through Cheektowaga. In fact i do daily. But the only time I seem to have a problem is in Lancaster and the surrounding country towns. Could it be that country cops have nothing better to do with their time than sit there and leach off of people trying to get to work on time? Ya the argument of “oh you should have left earlier” is always there, but lets face the facts. Sometimes shit just happens. Anyway before I get into a rant about how I dislike ticket jockeys with too much time on their hands and offend some of the officers that frequent this site I will get to my question.

Radar detectors and who has em?

Being out of the so called “scene” for sometime now I have fallen behind on what’s good, bad, and what actually works. Who here has a radar detector and how well does it work? Ok let me rephrase that. I dont care if you have one but rather need advice as to what kind to get.

Hell if you have an old military surplus radar/laser jamer/cloaking device thingy hooked up to your car and know where I can get one lemme know by all means. Im basically looking for something that will work every time all the time, and with few false alarms. Nothing too cheap, and nothing that will only tell me when my car is being light up, but rather the car few cars ahead of me.

Again. If any officers read this… im not trying to disrespect the long arm of the law. in fact i have nothing but respect for law enforcement agents. Hell a few of my good friends are Police officers. Some of them actually requested that they be put in the worst prisincts of their district for the simple reason that they wanted to learn from the best. And again. no disrespect but at the end of the day my hat get’s tipped off to a guy that has been in a shootout more than a guy that ticketed a 17 year odl with a riced out civic for tints neons, and a fart can.

Anyway I look forward to hearing everyones comments and suggestions.

Valentine One typically is rated number 1, just don’t take it to Canada

i have a passport 8500. no complaints, i love it…its saved my ass plenty of times lol

I have a crap 1 from radio shack that cost me 40 and it saved my ass plenty of times

i have an 8500 too, it has saved me a bunch of times also but you definetly need to be alert while using it as well

as with all of them

v1 here.
saved me plenty of times, but instant on, on desolate roads will always get you…same with laser.

V1 > *

As far as scramblers/jammers go I don’t believe that any have ever been proven effective. IIRC some guy has a bounty out for anyone who can demonstrate effective jamming…

V1 end of story

radar jammers are HIGHLY illegal. and the ones on the radio are fake.

laser jammers are legal, but quite costly… they actually work, especially when paired with Veil.

had a passport escort 8500 x50… now theres a new one the 9500, u can program it against false alerts and shit, if i were buying a new one know, i’d prolly go with the 8500 again or the 9500 if i found a good deal

i’ve seen videos on youtube of the 9500’s actually locking out REAL POLICE radar… BAD!

I am the owner of Radars for Rent, a business that rents out radar detectors for people to try out before they buy, or just for use on a road trip or such: www.radarsforrent.com

Having used a wide variety of detectors my preference is V1 over an 8500 purely due to arrows. Performance wise I found them to be nearly identical. If you wanted to try out both, I could certainly set you up with a deal.

yeah, if arrows are worth an extra $100 to you, go V1, if not, go 8500 x50 or 9500. don’t waste your time and money with anything else.

I’ve owned the Escort 8500 and now the V1. To be honest the 8500 I feel is a all around better radar. I had way less false alarms with it and it seemed to detect radar from a much greater distance. My V1 is constantly going off, I might as well just drive the speed limit with the amount off false alarms it gives me…

Im also a V1 fan… I borrowed one from some one on the board to do a road trip… put away my $40 cobra and took the V1… I came home returned it… In 2 weeks I had bought my own… and only once did I get a speeding ticket from then… I was arguing with the wifey and got hit with Laser (alot less if not no warning on any radar detector)

I was looking at getting laser scramblers but that will have to wait till after the Grease kit…

arrows are worth $100 imo

i have an old 8500, it’s like 4 or 5 years old way before the x50’s. I like the arrows on a v1, but I got a deal on this one I couldn’t pass up. Very good money spent…It hasn’t skipped a beat in all this time with more than usual abuse some of the time on the motorcycle.

I won’t get another until this one shorts out, or is obsolete.

I can just imagine the newer ones are even better. Either way go with a v1 or a top model escort.

I’ve got a cheapo Uniden about 10 years old, and it still “keeps me honest” on a regular basis.

you have to understand these “ticket jockeys” are just doing their job collecting “taxes” for the government. its not like they are just out to fuck with ricers. you have to treat it like a game and beat them at their own game. and you are on the right path by getting a detector.

i recommend the V1. they may give off false alarms when picking up frequencies that are not coming from a cop. but the areas your trying to protect yourself in are not as densely populated so you wont see as many false alarms. and if you learn how to distinguish between the false alarms and the real thing they are very reliable. i have never received a ticket since getting the V1 two years ago and i drive at ticket worthy speeds for 50+ miles a day.
