update

Scotts Valley, CA 2/05/2006-Last year, GOTO:Racing had an extremely successful campaign in the US Touring Car championship. Brian Lock drove their 2004 Subaru WRX to 2nd Place in the Drivers Championship, and was the recipient of the Apex’I Rookie of the Year trophy. Two wins and five podium finishes were proof that the then rookie team had what it takes to compete in a competitive National forum, and with the addition of new Subaru race car, a new series, and a new driver, the team plans to show those colors on an even bigger scale.

Very cool. I love those new Legacy Gt’s.

I like it  looks pretty slick

Thats one fast old man car!

That car is probably going to get smacked around in Grand American ST Cup… unless the AWD proves to be that much of a benefit. I’ve worked on at least one ST car and the weight reduction was insane… I believe the TSX was nearing 2400lbs if I remember correctly.

Although they don’t show much of the door skins, the inners, etc… it doesn’t look like there is much extra work into weight reduction of the GT, and they have the extra weight of the AWD system as well. Seems like a budgeted project, but cool none the less.

Edit: Looks like they expect to be 200-500 lbs heavier than most of the cars in ST… considering that many of the cars are underweight as it is, I can see them being even more overweight than that.

They said 3100 lbs. or something like that dry in the link. (that’s like riding with a car full of people in the acura to make it “fair”).

The weight is based on USTCC restrictions. AWD cars, well subarus in general, get a 500 lb penalty. I dont know what compelled the USTCC to “award” the car with so much weight as even AWD Audis have a significantly less minimum weight requirement.

Although it may seem a bit unfair it did not seem to effect them too much.

The car is at MINIMUM required race weight. As was thier WRX at near 3100lbs which placed VERY well last year in the USTCC.

Minimum USTCC weight for the WRX was 3000lbs

Compared to the front wheel drive TSX at 2470 lbs.

At 500lbs heavier it still was competitive last season spanking the TSX around.

Untuned the lock brothers commented that this car IS faster than thier current USTCC WRX.

Should be a very intresting season. It would be intresting to see the homogolation spec sheet for this car.

Coming in 2nd overall in points behind the 2380lb RSX-S Driven by Dave Brown. Even with a 620 lb penalty.

I dont beleive the extra weight is going to be a problem in USTCC. It may show up in grand am enduro races though just because they will go through tires much faster.

I dont follow USTCC much, I was just commenting on what I know from Grand Am. I think braking is where they are going to have problems. I know that most of the Hondas are sitting between 2300-2400 lbs and are still having front brake issues… The Legacy has 600-700lbs more to deal with, on stock brakes. Unless subaru comes out with a factory “package” with better brakes, I see it being an issue.

Stock brake fading during these endurance races, as well as the extra wear on the tires is going to hurt them significantly, in my opinion.

Also I wouldnt doubt that a big factor in these lap differences they are seeing between the wrx and the legacy might lie in the torque/power differences in the 2.5 over the 2.0.

i was just saying to my roommate the other day how i like the new legacys, sharp car

I would tend to agree with you about the endurance races. The problem is going to lie in the Tires primarily. Possibly the brakes too, the salvation will be that the Legacy GT comes with Brakes almost the size of STi brakes that are vented front and rear. But it is still uncharted territory. The pad and caliper mass and swept area rivals that of the STi brembos. The stock pads just suck though, but they are allowed to change that.

However the intention of this car was to build it for a full season of USTCC competition with an oppurtunity to get thier feet wet in Grand AM racing.

They probably wouldnt be too bad with some Ferodo DS3000’s on them, but you are still missing two pistons and a lot of heat dispersing material on the calipers, at least 10mm of disc diameter, and I believe the swept area, as well as pad size is quite a bit larger on the brembo’s.

I have a pair of STi brembos at the shop I can spec out, do you have access to LGT brakes? I am curious now, because the LGT does have a rotor only 10mm smaller than the brembos.

not too bad

I beleive they said that they are using 2 peice Racing Brake slotted rotors as well. I was confused about this though because I am not sure if they were allowed to do that in Grand AM.

They will however be running a full blown 4 piston Racing Brake Set for the USTCC.

I dont belive piston number matters for overall braking power just as long as the slave cylnders are similar in volume… Its just for feel and modulation.

I have access to an entire set of LGT brakes unfortunately they are on my car

I do have a set of Carbotech Bobcats that I have not put on my car yet. I guess I could take pix in front of the tape measure tonite.
