So we’re back to “the big evil oil companies are evil and as such, must be up to something nefarious”?
You think that the BP accident in the gulf is because BP as a company just didn’t give a fuck? Do you have any idea how much they spend in liability reduction? TONS. Why? Because if something like this happens, it could cost them their company… and with BP, it nearly did. If their stock had slid a bit more it was almost certain that they would have been swallowed up by some other company. And now they are on the hook for $20 billion. CEO got shitcanned.
But I agree, these big corps only care about one thing… Money. There needs to be strict regulations, and the regulations are already pretty strict. When people aren’t cutting corners, bad accidents are VERY rare. If people play by the rules, we’re not going to have a problem. DEP has hired a TON of new employees to ensure this is going to happen.
Are there risks? Yes. Are there concerns? Yes. Can this be done safely enough to be worth the risks? Absolutely. Especially when considering our only other option is coal, which we already know totally ruins the environment.
