grinding noise coming from under the car! What could it be?

Recently i’ve been hearing some grinding noise coming from under the car. I think the sounds coming from the driveshaft. You can only hear it at 900 rpm and sometimes while you’re driving aswell.

Any help will be appreciated… :?

Is it coming from the front, middle, or rear of the car.

could it be rattling noises? the heatshield on your cat?

Is the sound possibly coming from inside the transmission? Just something you’d want to rule out…

Also, it is quite possible that part of your exhaust system is touching your frame somewhere. It vibrates against the body/frame at certain RPM’s and actually sounds like a grinding noise.

Best of luck.

yeah i’m thinking it’s a rattle now because it happens the most when i’m not in gear…the sound comes right where me cats located, but it’s a little strange to me that it could happen so sudden… oneday my car is quite and the next the my car sounds like it’s going to far apart…

btw…does the driveshaft spin if i’m not in gear?

thanks for the help so far

No, the drive shaft is directly connected to the rear wheels through the differential and axles. The clutch is what dissenguages the shaft (and tranny) from the engine.

The driveshaft will spin as long as you’re moving. It’s connected to the wheels.

i think what theo is trying to say is that the engine itself will not be spinning the driveshaft… rather the shaft will spin via the connection to the rear end.
