GS 500 motor question... couple little problems.

this seal is seeping oil a bit… does anybody here know what these parts of the motor are, and if its barely seeping, is it that big of a deal to get it replaced?

Also, the idle on this bike sometimes goes up to 3k when sitting at a light…when i rev the bike, the idle then sticks there until the bike is put into gear… It is a 1996 or 98 gs 500 and its carbed (obviously) they probably have never been rebuilt, I dont even know how many carbs the bike has (i assume only one)… but what should he expect to pay to have them/it rebuilt…

Thanks

You’re going to pay someone else to work on a GS500? Just throw it away and buy another one. No, really though.

Your valve cover is leaking. Your finger is pointing at the end of a camshaft.

x2, valve cover, is this yours? if so why are you riding it

valve cover gasket, should be fairly easy.

throttle cable sticking?

if the throttle cable was sticking… wouldnt the grip be slow to return? because its not… it snaps right back…

Thanks fry for the link

I used to have the idling problem. Even when in 1st gear my old GS500 would rev up to 3-4k. What I would have to do is slowly let the clutch out until the bike would want to crawl forward and then the revs would stay down at normal idle. I never found out what the problem was that caused it to do that before I sold it.

that sounds like what he described to me too… any ideas?

found this:

When you let the clutch out halfway like that you’re just dragging the revs down with the engine. It’s probably just a gummed up carb. Pull it off, take it apart, soak all the parts in kerosene, scrub them with a tooth brush, put it back together.

Or you could try the lazy man’s method and pull the float bowl drain screw and shoot carb cleaner in there, then rinse with WD40. Maybe you’ll get lucky.

Its not my bike, and i always eff things with carbs up… that being said… ill just have him take the carb off and bring it to a little side shop and let them clean it and what not…

that was my initial recommendation to him anyway…

Thanks… (he’ll probably take the lazy man method anyway… unless he gets ambitious when changing the other gasket out.
