hard drive question

ok guys… my friend gave me his old 30GB hard drive… he put his music on there like i requested and some movies i wanted and then gave it to me… i plugged it in and it works fine excpet for a clicking noise comming from the hd and idk wtf it is… its not doing it all the time but like 5min or so it will start to click

it has been doing this for about 2-3 weeks

anybody know what this is??

are you sure its the HD and not some wire or something hitting the fan? When you installed it you may have changed something else.

Not wure why a HD would click, especially if it is working properly.

i’d say the spindle took a shit, but that generally means that the HDD wouldnt work.

check other things in the case.

its done or its about to die. its either the head or the arm.

i might be able pull data from it but that kind of work will cost ya cus we have to send it out to a clean room.

back it up while it still works…

30gig wont take long.

:wstupid: If the clicking is coming from the HD, it could go at anytime. Save the data somewhere else quick.

One way to see if it is the HD is run chkdsk on it. If it starts to click during that time, you’ve got your answer.

ok so i unplugged the hd and the clicking stoped… but 1 question… this never did it on my friedns cpu… but as soo nas i got it it did it on mine wtf is going on

id say in transport it got messed up.

BTW that drive is on its last leg, i woudl not mess with plugging and unplugin it. there is nothing that you can do to save this drive.

cool … cause my harddrive clicks like once a week… and its been doing it for months …

clicking is never a good sign for a hd. as people suggested, pull your data off. i have new sata drives if anyone is interested.

^ what everyone else said.
and i’ve had clicking drives last years. the 80gb in my ps2 was clicking in the pc so i decided to at least use it where i wouldn’t care if it died.
although my ipod drive died the second it started clicking, no chance to get anything off of it (and yes i tried many methods).

i’d say you can still use it, but don’t put anything irreplacable or important on it. at least copy everything off and low level format it so you’re working with a cleaner hd and have less to go wrong.

guess today im burning my entire 20 gig drive to dvd-r … fun … i REALY want to have to shorten tons of filenames so that everything reads off the disk the right way in the future

yup… on it’s way out.

one of mine did the same thing… got to the point where I wasnt even able to read off of it. I was, however, able to throw it in the freezer for like 4 hours and plug it back in to the computer, which gave me just enough time to copy the data to another hard drive. Sounds strange but worked

does anybody have a hd they would sell? looking in prcie range of lno more then 50 bucks i just want one that i can store my music and movies on… let me know

heh… go to circuit city. thats where I got my 200 gig at. I think I payed, after all was said and done, around 30.00 for it

called them up and asked them to hold an 80 gig they had on sale for me. Went to pick it up and they told me they didnt have one. So they sold me the 200 gig for the price of the 80 gig, plus I qualified for the 30.00 rebate on the 200 gig AND 80 gig

I’ve got a couple of old ~40gb drives. ata66/100 iirc. BYOFormatting

ok i got a gateway would it work in mine

^^ yes

how much would ya sell one for
