getting info off of a dead HD

my GF’s hard Drive went today and she has a bunch of school papers saved on there that she needs how can i get them off of it? could i just take it out and plug it into my computer?

windows wont start up and i get a HD error when i do the HP diagnostics (sp?) scan

Does the drive sound like it’s spinning up?

you hear any clicking noises or anything like that?

no, no clicking noises or anything everything sounds normal. HP is sending a new HD as we speak

toss the drive in an external enclosure… see what happens… or use a boot able cd like knoppix and ftp it off to some other person’s computer… or burn what you want onto cd’s or wait til the new drive comes in … install the OS on that one … set the old drive as a slave and transfer the shit off…

if it works any method above will work… if it doesn’t you are probably fucked in the bum and all is lost

If you want to bring it by later after work I can see what I can pull off of the drive for you.

Locutus ftw.

If you have another computer that boots just hook the bad drive up as a slave. About 50% of the time you can boot up and get some data off the drive. If it’s not completely shot and windows can see it you should find a new drive in My Computer. The drive letter will be the next letter after your existing HD’s.

:word:

If it can be recovered he can do it.

pay for a copy of spinrite.

I’m serious.

It will chug along and recover data in almost all cases.

If it doesn’t work just email the guys and tell them you want a refund, and you will get it.

The last time i did a spinrite recovery, it took 3 soild days for the program to get all the data but it did.

As has been said, hook it up on as a secondary drive, copy & paste. If the hdd spins up, most of the time this will work.

If its dead-ass lame, contact locutus… just ask him to ignore the kiddie porn.

lol no kiddie porn on my GF’s computer i know that for sure
