Hard Drive Scanner for Mac OS X??

anyone know of any programs to scan the hard drive on a mac?

Trying to determine if a drive is going bad or not. Thanks

try it in a windows system?

it is currently sitting in an imac and the computer works ok.

Windows doesn’t understand HFS+

disk utility? its in the OS

The BIOS should still recognize the disc. It might not boot but it will recognize it. What exactly are you testing?

Does it Power up?

Corrupted?

I ran it through disk utility. It fixed some bad permissions but didn’t see any other problems with the drive.

Was kind of looking for something a bit more inclusive/comprehensive

It is working, had reports of a few corrupt files which I removed. Just wanted to check on the overall health of the disk.

assuming it’s a seagate

Let me correct a few things in this thread.

  1. Macs don’t use a BIOS, they have an EFI Firmware.
  2. Disk Utility’s “Verify Permissions” feature checks all the .bom (Bill of Materials) files in /Library/Receipts. These files list the appropriate permissions that installed package files are supposed to have. Running the permissions check compares the permissions listed in the .bom files against the actual permissions on the system. If they are different Disk Utility will attempt to correct them. This process does not check the hard drive integrity.
  3. Disk Utility’s “Verify Disk” feature is exactly the same as fsck. It looks for errors in the file system. These errors could come from hard shutdowns, et al. A failed disk repair could*be a sign of a failing hard drive but not always.

The best way to check if a disk is failing is to copy a bunch of data to and from the drive while looking at /var/log/system.log for I/O errors.

cool, I will do some extensive read/writes and tail the system.log for errors.

Thanks man

btw when I referred to the BIOS before I was talking about putting the drive into a windows system and checking to see if it was recognized. Sorry for the confusion.

<EDIT>
That seagate tool thing works on Mac btw
