Ya gun safes are useless unless you are a collector or have little kids. Most people I know that have handguns, they have them located in places around the house that can easily be grabbed but are not easily found by someone who doesn’t know where they. Pepper spray is good but again, you need to be ready to use it. Most attackers jump you by surprise which leaves the quick response to grab a knife, pepper spray, taser, etc. very limited unless you are trained on fast responses with a weapon.
The gun in the bed room would work only if she was in her room alone, heard someone come in. Its a step to help protect but don’t let it become a false sense of security.
You just have to make sure that before you shoot you’re actually afraid for your life or the lives of your family. If you shoot someone who’s in your house and it’s because you were afraid they were trying to steal your 52" plasma, you’re going to jail. Society has made the judgment that even a criminal’s life is more important than material possessions.
Again, takes training to keep your cool and evaluate the situation before unloading on a closed door. Not a nervous reaction of an 18 year old.
Stick with the police and teach her to be more aware of her surroundings if you wanna do anything. There is a lot of little things you can teach to keep people aware of whats going on around them and things to look for.
Just to be clear, I wasn’t saying it was ok to shoot at a closed door as long as your afraid for your life. I was making a separate point. You’d have to be a dumbass to shoot without knowing what’s behind the door, and what’s behind whatever’s behind the door.
I say forget the gun, go South American guerilla on his ass and threaten him with a machete.
Your home alone, here someone break in to your home. Shut the bedroom door. call 911 on cell phone, and start yelling you are armed and will start shooting.
if this is a family memeber, i can gurantee the will start yelling who they are…
Gun safes are fine if your keeping them out of kids, or have a nice coolection with a glass front showing them off. Other than that if someone breaks into your home they not only keep you from be able to use the weapon to protect family and home. But also if the robber wanted them they will get them in a safe or not.
If the person in your home keeps comming towards where you are, get to the door, FUCK that they are dead. It would be justified shooting.
Now pulling a gun on someone while your jumped, Most gun fight happen with in 7 feet. But unlees trained you would not be thinking to reach for you weapon.
an attacker can cover 21 feet by the time someone could unholster a sidearm a squeeze around off.
If you spay the OC spray, be preparred to get coverd in it yourself
Believe me I’m not expert on guns, but I’ve always been told to know what you’re shooting and think about what’s behind your target that your bullet might hit. Is it a brick wall? Or for chrissake is it a crowd of innoncent bystanders?
Shooting without knowing who’s there is something I bet any gun course instructor or cop would tell you that you’d be crazy to do.
Ya that is something they teach you with long range rounds where you need to be aware of what is behind your shot but buck shot in a shotgun at close range can penetrate maybe 5-6 sheets of drywall. The chances of it going through your wall and into a neighbors house is non existent. A .22 or 9mm will be about the same but will have more potential to go through a exterior wall. If you are shooting out a door to your room, chances are you are talking about 3-4 surfaces it would need to get out of: door|hallway|exterior wall|siding which all contain some heavy materials.
Outside of the bullet getting out of your house, there is still the risk of shooting inside and hitting someone inside your house or a pet. All in all, its an ok safety measure to have a gun accessible but it will be more risk to actually shoot at someone even if you are in your “rights” to do something. Hope you have a lot for a lawyer esp in this country.
I will agree to a poin on this one, If shotting for fun, target practicing you should always know whats behind your target. You would be suprised on how diffrent objects will stop a round very quick. Most rounds are made to hit an object, expand to cuase as much damage as possiable. This also will stop a round very quickly, keeping it from penatrating other objects. Again thier is alot of factors that can change this though.
But now if your in the sittuation i described it is totally diffrent. One major factor would be you all ready called 911 and they would be recording your phone call. They would know your armed and have proof of you yelling that you would shoot if the person was to come towards you.
Unfortunately the legal system is not that simple. If you are involved in any incident, someone sues you, you are required to defend yourself in court. Ya you may come out on top and win but it will cost a lot of money and time. Not saying that its not a last resort but definitely be smart when it comes to unloading a weapon of any sort.
