Help making custom hood vents

I absolutly love the look of this one type of hood. One of the cars from the niagra meet i belive had this hood. Id like to kno how he did it, if he did it himself. Or where one can be purchased. I have enough confidence to try with an old hood doing sumthing like this but i cant get a pic that is close enought showing exactly how its done. This is the hottest hood ever! Whos ever car that is awesome!!! if your offended by me posting the pics of your ride ill gladly take them off. Im getting my spare hood in a weeks time so ill be starting this project soon any help would be great. I thought of a few diffrent ways of doing this. #1 getting some sheet metal make those vent peices and weld them onto the hood then cut out a hole under the vent to make it do sumthing rather than just look good. or #2 http://www.240sx.org/links/installs/hood/hood.htm same idea except a few more vents and maybe pull the hood out instead of pushing it in? Thanks

Dip I believe ?

Matty was telling me all about his car/setup today when I was at his place… sounds sweet and indeed looks beautiful

Thats a very one of a kind hood like the supra in fast n the furious. I like it but thats not exactly the look im going for. Other than that, the cars a great example of what kind of talented people are out there who can use a few hand tools, sum brains and an attitude like “I can finish what i start” can acheive. I love the fogs inplace of the lights so sleepy eyes can be run all the time. Hood and intercooler setup is sick.

Jedi, That hood and car is Mr. Zero-Cahill…
everything on that car is done by him… very sick ride…

PM him

Thanks for the compliment…

Although the hood was never finished as there was going to be more done when he had time…

Hope that helps :D/ :thumleft:

thats Mr. Zero
Cahil

not me.
mine is more of the F&F supra style, just cut outs with screening

holy, that’s deffinately not dips… that would never get out the door of my place. Tell me that’s not the finished product? the gap where the ducting is in the OEM opening won’t work as most of the air will bleed under it where the gap is or flow back out where that bloody huge hole is on the top of the bumper. where’s the IC ? is it even a turbo? if it’s not turbo then why do that to your car and wreck your normally acceptable aerodynamics.

Far too many questions for the guy that did it…

I dunno how Cahil gets away with driving that on the street and not
getting pulled over. A little overkill on the cuts I think.

V-Mount…

and I thought it was dips car…

matty just informed me otherwise…

my bad

I honestly love the looks…more care could have been taken when i saw the pics from the side. From the front  i think it looks killer. i plan on doing sumthing similar except im going to use sheet metal to make the vents cut narrow long gaps where the sheetmetal vents i fabricated will go…weld them on decently…lay sum flease or w/e the stuffs called that they use for fiberglass boxes. then lay down sum fiberglass smooth it all out for a more areodynamic look. im praying this turns out awesome. Only thing im worried about is water running down the hood ontop of my engine…over time water sitting ontop of my engine would rust…i dont want that…i can make covers for the inside but they will fill with water lol…so ill have to properly drain the covers and use a bit of small hose to direct the water where it can fall between my engine and body of the car. All i have to ask is if anyone knows the proper mixture for bonding fiberglass to metal. I kno you add bondo to the resin and hardener mixture. Not sure about the bondo hardener. Anyone who can help me out with this mixture will deffinatly improve the final product. When i finish this ill deffinaltly post how everything turned out and if it turns out great ill do a “how to make custom hood” in the how to section  Cross your fingers for me please

u can buy that vent piece on is own and mold it in to your hood . raceon sells it

So, what your saying is you have no clue what your doing when it comes to glass work… but your going to try to make a complex object, to somehow bond it to a metal, SMOOTH surface and have it turn out so it does something useful?? you might as well take a sawzall make a big square freehand on your hood and cut a hole in it, it will accomplish the same thing and save you time and money.

Here’s something to try first. take a pc of sheet metal ~ 35x35cm 20 ga. (About the same guage as a car hood). Now lay on some glass and bondo built up into a shape similar to your proposed hood vent, wait for it to dry then bent the metal a bit without supporting the glass… or, warm up the metal to say 45C then let it cool or even better warm it up then put it in the fridge to simulate winter or latefall early spring driving… and that’s just one specific section of your grand plan…

you may think I’m slamming you and your absolutely right… doing something like this , without a clue is going to get someone killed, the odds of this monstrosity flying off on the hwy when your unsupported hood flexes and the ‘vent’ pops and releases … flies throught the air and nails some mom and kids in her mini van behind you, is double your best HS report card… THIS kind of crap is the reason why cops do all these safety blitz’s… dumb kids with no clue about the implications of thier actions… THis is the key difference between the last 50+ years of hot rodding/tunning and the last 10 years of tunning… kids who don’t know what they are doing and not thinking of the potential accidents thier ignorancce can cause…

i do things at my own risk. i understand your a great welder/fabricator and have seen what works and what doesnt but i if you tell me not to pour gasonline into a fire pit then try lighting it i wont listen, i find out whatt works and what doesnt on my own…i dont care about the money im 18 living under my rents house no kids. I have common sence understand theres a limit and ill push it as far as i can just as i would on the track. Thanks for giving me the advice on the making sure the fiberglass is securly in place and wont fly off. As for bonding the fiberglass to the hood ill drill small 1/4 inch holes everywhere fiberglass the inside of the hood where all the holes are??? I could deeply scratch the hood so the fiberglass will stay secure. reinforce the framing under the hood so it doesnt bend. good for you? Thanks for the ideas, you could have just sudjested sumthing as simple as “it seems unsafe it could fly off injure sumone behind me” instead of trying to run me into the ground. Im just starting out in the tunning busness yet for my age i can succesfully do a sh!tload more than the average auto loving kid in highschool. We’ll see in ten years or so from now where im standing. i already work part time as a automotive installer and currently i have installed fiberglass boxes put benz headlights onto a pontiac complete fiberglass front end 4 screens 2 in the back and one on the outside of each door. im not a retard who aims for 900whp and doesnt think once about wether the chassis can withstand the power or brakes suspension etc etc. you can Pm me if u want to further talk, this very much disturbs me as you underestimate what potentials in craftmanship some of us have…

Im still trying out this project. The mixture for bonding fiberglass to metal is 50/50 resin and bondo then add however much of the resin hardener as needed. no need for bondo hardener. Ive seen this used in the trunk of a car sealing off holes before a fiberglass box was made. I also put sum on a crap hood after scuffing the paint down let it dry for 2 days then took a screw driver and a mallet to it…it doesnt come off all at once nor does it flake or chip off…as a matter of fact its far stonger than just bondo alone. I think this is going to turn out into a great looking hood. As for you BAS get out of my post. As for moderators is there really a need to lock this? If you guys feel its too risky and dangerous lock it and ill get the message as well as carry on the project in my own hands.

hmm.

you ask for advice. it’s given. you are given obvious warnings and possible issues on the subject. You ignore them.

My .02

Don’t half ass a job. Do the research, learn the skills. Become greater than you are and achieve the best you can.

yes there is a definate difference between exterior, and interior glass work. it’s not all in the mix of your resins etc. it’s in the direction of grain, the number of layers… etc…

I’m not going to harp on you saying it’s not a good idea. But, in all honesty you really should be more interested in the structure of you project than the style.

I personally, if constructing hood vents of any kind, would prefer to stay away from fiberglass and bondo, unless I’m using them to finish off minor imperfections. I wouldn’t hack away willy nilly at the hood structure either, the frame is there for a reason. thry your best to work around the existing framework, and reinforce areas you need to remove. try to make the hood stronger than it originally was, keep in mind the hood will need a decent amount of flex to it, both from opening and closing, but to the external forces of driving. try to create as much of the ‘look’ you’re going for from the original hood material. and welding in metal.

I’m not a pro, nor do I do professional body work. I just think you should humble yourself to the situation, and learn something new and accept the advice of others to help you get a hold of what you really want to do.

I did. and still do. it’s very easy to pretend you know nothing, and ask questions. There’s no such thing as a stupid question, and it never hurts to ask for help.

Clearly i was asking for help and advice to begin with until i get posts from BAS. Clearly this guy just likes running people into the ground if you read his posts. Maybe its a good idea to not say anything at all unless you got sumthing nyce to say. Hint Hint<--------BAS Maybe ill learn from my mistakes, Maybe you can learn from yours? If you dont want to learn from being a complete a$$ i hope my mistake fkys thew your window. My Topic was fine seemed very interesting to everyone…Then along comes BAS…Change your tone! and just maybe you’ll get sum friends around here instead of making enemys.

FYI, Mr. Zero’s car (Cahil) is currently for sale on Trader.ca
