The last time the DVD burner in my PC worked was after I made the demo disks for the NYSpeed DVD… after that, I haven’t been able to burn DVDs or CDs with the drive.
I’m able to read CDs and DVDs (I can still play Battlefield ) but whenever I go to use a writing program it give me an error like “please connect the device.”
Now I NEED to get this working ASAP to burn some film I shot last week for a client. So I went out tonight and picked up an external DVD burner as a temporary solution… but I get the SAME errors with this drive too!
If anyone has any idea what’s going on, please help! If there is anyone who is good with this stuff and wouldn’t mind taking a look at it I’d appreciate it. I’m not a total n00b when it comes to PC issues, but I’ve got no idea what’s going in here.
I can’t find the original drivers. They never shipped with the computer, instead I’m supposed to get them from some mystic Sony website… which has no idea what my computer is since it’s a custom job… I’m still searching.
SOLUTION: To anyone experiencing problems with the SONY DW-Q28A DVDRW check your firmware. Turns out the drive is the same as the DRU-800A and you can update the firmware from KYS1 to KY04. Have been burning fine since the change, hope this helps others.
THANKS to all who helped out with this problem of mine. I really appreciate it.
Not the same error as you, but some searching through google found multiple forums with people complaining about the drive and tons of issues with it, which eventually led me to that “fix”. Try the newest firmware/drivers and it SHOULD clear up.
Also your external one you just bought, what happens when you uninstall that from the device manager & re install with the drivers included on the cd for it?

Any software… I’ve got several Sony writing programs specifically for HD video that no longer work. Roxio won’t see the drive to burn CDs. I can drag-n-drop files sometimes onto a disk, but when I use the wizard to write them it says there is no drive…
I’ve disconnected the external drive to focus again on getting my internal one working. It didn’t come with drivers anyway and instead says Windows should be able to detect it… and it did. Windows recognized it fine with the exact model #, and installation was “successful” or so that’s what it said…
Try going into the BIOS and letting it autodetect your drives. I had a problem in the past with my DVD drive becoming a CD Drive in the BIOS and then windows wouldn’t see it correctly.
After you’ve done that boot into windows safe mode and remove everything under DVD/CDRom drives in device manager. Sometimes “ghost” devices will show up in device manager in safe mode that don’t show up otherwise. Reboot and let windows start normally and re-detect them.
I’ve never seen windows need a driver for a DVD/CD burner. Hell, I just installed a drive with a special Kreon firmware for reading Xbox360 games and windows didn’t even need a driver for that.
