Hopping along through....

Hello,

I’m from the US, born in Chicago, moved around the upper midwest, then to China, then to western NY which is where I plan to stay for a while. I’m proficient in Chinese (reading, writing and speaking), but quickly losing my skills.

Originally got into cars in 1999 when I was 15 and I bought/acquired a z31. Found some forums and eventually convinced my parents to sign me up for a local autocross school and quickly got into that. Went around to a few different classes, then changed to a different z31, then to a different car, eventually going back to my first z31 and doing the decidedly strange thing of taking off all my modifications to go back to stock class. Prepped the car to the limit of the rules for that class and actually became pretty competitive on a local level. Then I got disenchanted with racing/introduced to the Chinese language. Still kept my z31 for a couple more years after autocrossing, holding on to very little of my racing parts (still sad I sold my Watanabe RS8’s). I said I’d keep the car till the wheels fell off. Well, after shearing off all for lug studs 6 miles away from my destination during a 350 mile drive I decided that one wheel was enough. Fixed the car, sold it, and bought an MKIII Jetta and lived in car obscurity until I sold it just prior to moving to China for 2 years, then car absence thereafter.

Meanwhile, since stopping autocrossing I managed to lose over 100 lbs. Bikes became a passion and upon moving back to the US I vowed to go without a car, but kept on looking for a fun one (either old RWD or quirky fun FWD). After about 1.5 years of searching I found a 200sx (with the SR20) with a blown motor. Bought it and my mechanic friend towed it back to his shop so we could fix it. Time moves on and nothing had been done on the 200sx. Ended up coming onto a silly situation where I could trade my non running, totally questionable 200sx for a rough, but running z32. Took that deal without much hesitation.

Been fixing up that car, mostly tuning and fixing issues that were created by a stupid previous owner (but I can’t totally slam him, he did do some smart things to the car, like replacing most of the worn out suspension bits with not worn out suspension bits from a junkyard car).

And that’s where I am. I still ride my bike to work, but I am enjoying having a fun car of my own to tinker with and work on.

As of today I don’t really have plans to do any mods to the z32, but if I do I will limit myself to mods that are still legal for SCCA’s STX class. For a visual theme I am shooting for the ‘subtle, tasteful drifter’ scheme. However, I have no serious plans to race or drift the car. Any event I plan to do in the future will probably involve a combination of swimming, cycling and running.

Carry on,
LBFF

the source of my cooling problems. The entire car was this dirty when I acquired it. Even the seats had to be scrubbed with degreaser and a scouring pad.

Another Z guy

No pics of the Z32 though?

And yeah that would cause some issues, lol. Anytime the temp gauge moves up or down from this point you know your car is having problems:

It should get to that temp and sit there like a rock, regardless of mods.

And that’s exactly what my coolant gauge does now.

No pictures of z32. I’m really a z31 guy stuck in a z32. To me the exterior is not very interesting (the interior and rear suspension are nice, though). Just take a stock white z32 photo and add 24 years and 270k of life. That should give you a close approximation of what it looks like.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO TEAR THE STREETS UP WITH!!! (OR JUST CRUISE) LET ME KNOW

Damn fine, detailed intro. Welcome.

One of the better intro threads, for sure. Welcome aboard man

Yea, we def. don’t see intro. threads like this anymore. Welcome.

You’re welcome. I’m not your normal automotive enthusiast and definitely wanted to come across as that.

Just ignore this person…

Welcome.

Eeeyo man, welcome to WNY.

Was anyone reminded of the old childrens book? Brought me right back to being a little kid.

“little bunny foo foo, hoppin’ through the forest, taking all the field mice and boppin’ 'em on the head.”

LOL

first thing that popped into my head lol

welcome!

Welcome Little Bunny Foo Foo!!!

This looked obvious. For fun I messaged him anyway. Thankfully, he lives like 5 hours away from me.

I missed the Rochester Z Club show again this year. Pretty good collection of solid cars. Let me know if your looking for parts on the 32. May have some schtuff. Maybe I’ll see you out there. Post pics or you’ll get banned.

Welcome! Deff a very professional intro!
