How do you Remove and Replace the alternator on a 1990 SOHC?

hey guys and gals  ,I just recently bought an alternator off PearlS13…
and I was just wondering if anyone has replaced their alternator by themselves…
if so, how is the easiest way of replacing it…
I really dont want to go and spend 80$ on getting it done… i
m fairly good with using tools, and have done repairs myself …
but like i said i just want to know the easiest way to replace it…
any information would be great…

thanx

Wrong section.

Moved to tech.

I did mine in the summer, and if im correct… Take the belt off first, then there is a bolt on the top of the alternator, one on the bottom as well both 14mm i believe. Then get a light and put it on the side of the alternator by your oil filter, you’ll see a plug, careful not to break it, it clips out like the other electrical plugs through-out the car… And last, beside the plug theres a red rubber boot, pull it off and you’ll see a nut holding the power cable on, 10mm i think, undo it and your done…

Remember to disconnect the battery. And if you have a amp meter, start the car, rev it to 2000 rpm and hold the meter on the positive and negative terminals of the battery, if the meter reads between 13.8-14.4 your alternator is fine… if its below those numbers its pooched. if its above, then iuno what the fuk is with your car, lol…

Good luck

thanx a lot that was extremely helpful
now i dont have to spend the money to get it done by a mechanic…

thanx again

fyi, SON has a FAQ section with the FSM’s available…

nice topic… a buddy of mine and i need to know how to replace an alternator too… but mine’s on an 89 240sx… same layout though i’m guessing… hmmmm… the alternator is under right? somewhere in the middle… i dont even know what an alternator looks like LOL!!

the alternator is locted on the left side of the engine looking down from the front of the car…
i hope the job goes smoothly, but remember to draw out a lil diagram of how the bel;t goes on, thats all you need is to finsish putting the new alternator on and forgetting how the belt goes…

ne ways thanx a lot to everyone for ur input!

thanx again

well i just finished putting the new Alt on and shes running great now…
ummm just a change from shiftKrunk’s input the bottom bolt you take out is a 14mm (so hes right), but the top bolt is a 12mm, just to make things a little easier for those who are gunna tackle this project themselves!!

I think you are going to have to do a little more research before tackling this even… Do you know where the headlight fluid reservoir is yet?
