How does this clutch look? Pics inside...

This clutch came from an '89 SHO that was previously owned by FuzzyFish (14.4 @ 98mph so it was working quite well). I have been having some issues with my current clutch in my '93 SHO and rather than dropping $400+ on a new clutch and flywheel balancing I was thinking of running this clutch seeing as I know it was working great before I removed it.

I’ve never really gotten down and dirty as to inspecting the clutch wear and understanding how good is good and how bad is bad. My first reaction was that it looked okay…but I’d like some more opinions.

If I were to run this clutch I noticed the pressure plate fingers have “worn into” the throwout bearing. If I used this throwout bearing in a differnent transmission is that a bad move??? Also, some of the fingers seem to be more “relaxed” than others when it was disassembled…is this a sign of anything???

Thanks, Mike

Pressure plate and flywheel look like shit … disk looks okay … just remember that it is just a really big brake pad …

IMO $400 and new clutch>having to rip tranny out and replace in 2 months

If it’s suspect, TOB’s are like $20 bucks. If I had a potentially decent clutch and the time/ability to change a clutch in a day on a car I don’t have to drive every day, I’d toss it in and give it a try.

That’s it…I can drive my Mustang while the SHO is down for the day.

Here’s the thing…the current AutoZone clutch kit that is in my car is suspect. Also, if memory serves me right I’m missing a dowel in the flywheel. Ever since I put the mtx in this once atx’ed '93 I’ve had a vibration. Through my trouble shooting I’m now looking at the clutch and flywheel set-up, but before I drop any money into this car I thought I’d go the free route and spend a few hours of my life swapping a clutch. I’ve been in and out of this car enough to be able to do this job in an afternooon.

My thoughts now are to use this clutch, flywheel, and trans all AS IS…it was running great when I drove the car home, don’t see why it woudln’t work a little longer.

If it proves to work well, then I’d be more inclined to drop some $$$ on a nice clutch and flywheel set up.

hot, thats what my clutch looked like in my 92 SHO. I had the clutch buying blues also, but I sucked it up and bought the stage 3 clutch. That thing was awesome.

I know the TOB was bad, never had issues with that clutch. But keep in mind I mostly raced that car. Is there any kind of alignment process for the trans-axle as far as offset dowels or anything or does that not apply here?

That said the car was only driven about 6 times after I pulled off a mid 14 run.

Taken from my post on SHOforum with the same info…this is in regards to the possibility that I have a missing dowel pin in my flywheel. Supposed to have 3 in there…but I seem to remember one missing.

So maybe I won’t be needing Fuzzy’s old clutch afterall…

skip the swap and just buy my 95 haha…just had a BRAND new clutch put in. it feels awesome.

Well hopefully fixing that imbalance will solve that problem.

Thats about as smart as re-using a condom.

I think that’s a bit of a stretch…

Perhaps a bit extreme. But not as extreme as trying to save a few bucks by re-using a clutch and having to potentially do the job twice.

I fucking hate everyone that takes basic physics… this makes me want to cry

just get the new one

UPDATE…
Tonight I removed the clutch from my SHO and was delighted to find 2 of 3 dowels in the flywheel!!! Perhaps, just perhaps this has been the root of nearly 2 years of frustation trying to figure out what was causing my drivability/vibration problems. I plan to drop the flywheel off tomorrow to be resurfaced…waiting for my new clutch to arrive on Saturdayhttp://jelloslug.com/shoforum/thumb.gif

For a clutch I went with a brand new stock piece, along with a new TOB. I’m stoked to get this thing back together…I really hope that dowel was the cause of this madness.

Anyone know if a flywheel can be checked for balance??? I’d really like to know what one missing dowel can do…if anything.

No, flywheels have a special molecular structure that only allows dynamic balance to be checked while the flywheel is rotating.
