Rate my clutch *pics*

Took this out this morning.

The pressure plate looks pretty good to me. The teeth don’t seem to be
in bad shape. The disc seems pretty flat/smooth. Not much grip on them
by the looks of it.

Kind of hard to tell from the pics but I guess you can tell me if the disc is
pretty much shot.

(all pics are 1600x1200 - I put them as links to avoid blogging this thread)

you got cracks on the flywheel and it looks like it was overheated in places…

So what do you suggest Adam? Do I have to replace it? Or can I get by
with this and a stock clutch for another season?

I still want to track the car, I just won’t abuse the clutch as much if I do.

oneword…while its all out
fidenza
(sp)

Dunno if I can afford it. Can’t I get away with it for another year?

probably…IMO its not worth the hassle replacing it twice for one years use

Well I’ll be buying one off Alex who has a slightly better flywheel. For the
price it will cost me to resurface mine, I’ll just go ahead and use his.

I’ll keep mine then for backup I guess.

I really don’t see any justification on spending extra for a performance
flywheel when I really don’t need it.

Friction disk is dorked, flywheel and pressure plate are overheated as Adam said… I would go buy a PP, friction disk and TO bearing kit and be done with it.

It is pretty toast but it still should have moved forward a BIT I would think. Is the TO bearing stuck at all? Really look into how it was sitting when you took it apart. It may be that it just doesn’t move out further than it was without hitting the tranny case or something, in which case it was released as much as possible but because the FD was too thin it would grab. I would think that it would allow the FD to wear right down to the rivet, but it could be made to bottom out first I suppose. Just really check that the TO bearing moves it’s full travel properly.

I remember when we pulled the bellhousing off, we played with the fork
that moves the TO bearing. I remember at one point it didn’t really move
back and forth as it should have and would get stuck sometimes.

I’ll put it back in and see how it differs.

In anycase, I’m most likely gonna get a stock clutch kit form Nissan and
then see how thigns go after putting everything back in.

get the flywheel lightened and resurfaced

get a throwout bearing

get a pilot bushing

get a new clutch

or buy my used clutch and pressureplate its got 15,000 km’s on it

$50

  • Flywheel surface is burnt and appears to be cracked.

  • Clutch is very worn out.

  • Pressure plate surface is sorched, and looks to be gouged. Teeth have some significant wear on them.

Replace them all at once, as well as the throwout bearing. Might as well do pilot bushing while you’ve got the flywheel off.

It may cost a bit but it’ll save you money, and time, in the long run. Do it right the first time or pay more the second time, the choice is yours.

I’ve made up my mind:

  • Stock clutch kit from Nissan (Nate - smurf6x6 I belive on SON - can get it to me for sub-$250CAD). The kit should come with the TO bearing and everything else

  • I bleieve I might have to get a pilot bushing separetly (also from nate)

  • Flywheel I’m gonna grab from Alex. I also believe he has a pretty low mileage motor it came from and its resurfaced so I’m sure it’s better then mine.

All in all I hope to do this under $500CAD, which I’m sure I’ll be able to do.

pilot bushing is under 5 dollers from nissan

i have a new pilot bushing hanging around somewhere. if i find it its yours

You are right on track… If you are looking to save a few bucks I know the NAPA clutch is just over 200 with tax, $225 I think. It doesn’t have a good feel to me though, but I remember you wanting an SR anyway I think, so you might not care for the few months you would use it, just a suggestion. You can clean off a dirty flywheel no problem too, if it is chattered or severely overheated it will ruin the FD prematurely and jerk the car when trying to engage… Ie yours will still work but it will wear out quick and feel like ass…again, depends on your future plans.

Whoa, stock clutch for that money? Too much.

I got my custom clutch (copper ceramic pucks able to hold 350 ft. lbs. torque) and rebuilt pressure plate for $400, taxes and shipping in. And thats going through CP Racing. You can probably get it for cheaper if you find the clutch shop.

As for the flywheel. Grab a used one in decent condition (not cracked or scortched), and have it surfaced at a local machine shop. That shouldn’t be more then $50-$60 all together.

Then all you need is a TOB and a pilot bushing for around $35-$40 and you’ll all set.

re use a cracked burnt flywheel?

smart idea if you dont like your legs.
