the guy i bought my bike from neglected to mention the busted ram air tube and his half ass attempt to fix it… o well im over it… he made a thread on here about it breaking so he’s obviously aware of it but i dont care… i was just upset when i noticed that the metal plates he screwed into the plastic made there way to the airbox which would have upset me had a plate go past the filter and into the motor… then i would have some beef with him… ahh the risks of buying a used bike
anyway…
anybody have any luck reinforcing it… heres a pic of it
im thinking of grinding a little plastic out of the inside and reinforcing it with galvanized aluminum plates and bolting them in there with some locktite… maybe ill go to kawi and see if they will reimburse me like they did with the zx-10r’s…
how hard would it be to make a mold from an existing piece of plastic for the ram air tube on my new bike and make the tube out of a stronger material?
the tube cost 90 bucks and they shatter when you do wheelies… i generally set down lightly but if i have one botched wheelie it may cost me a lot of money…
the ram air tube is also the front fairing stay and it holds the gauges and upper fairing and headlights in place… maybe theres an easier way to strengthen it or maybe i can change the compression/rebound/damping in the front end of the bike so it wont bottom out…?
its the part that says ram-air on it
heres a picture
yikes! i wouldnt doubt that it could be done, it would just take a long time and a good sized chunk of change.
mayb if u could get some1 to draw it up in a CAD program, we could just ‘wander’ into another machine shop over at UB that has CNC capabilities with the CDA file and a block of Billet in had and mayb they could help u out again.
why don’t you try out those suspension options before you start fabbing stuff up in the wrong material. If it’s still a problem afterwards, then maybe you should stop riding like that…at least on that bike.
yea… .billet is out of the question… im just lookin for ideas… i will try the suspension but it looks like the guy who owned the bike before me broke it… so i cant fiddle with suspension till i get to see how it acts when im riding it… im just seeing if there may be something im overlooking to easily strengtehn the part… .btw the part that brakes is where the 92210 parts go into the frame… the top 2 tabs seem to break easily…
For all the headche of repairing that piece, how much for a new one or a used one from another bike?
What about cutting away the broken material and fabricating a “box” or a sleeve that inserts inside both ends, then just redrilling the holes for mounting?
u got me totally stumped on this one. that piece is really complex to re-make out of something else. about the only thing i can think of is making it out of some aircraft material or something totally crazy like that. did you check ony other bike forums? i would find it hard to believe that no1 else that has this bike has never tried popping a whellie b4 and had this happen.
and jsut another thought…do u think that the fact thats its cold outside has anything to do with it? things (like plastic) tend to get brittle in the cold
