I think someone bought my car. What is the safest way to accept payment and not get the dicking of a lifetime?

cashiers check … a personal check with waiting for it to clear AND verifying funds … escro(sp?) … or even possibly a reputable companys money order

well with 93pgt didnt the guy who bought the vr4 put a stop payment on it as soon as it was deliverd
um yea, def take cash lol no checks of ANY kind unless he pays you ahead of time and it clears THEN you give him the car, even if its a bank check. or a direct transfer from account to account (thats the most fool proof way imho with him being in california).
what happend with me was he gave me a bank check for the remainder of the balance (on a friday) and while it was clearing over the weekend he put a stop payment on it so the money never got into my account. and me trying to be a nice guy, wrote him a receipt for cheaper, so i couldn’t do anything about it. lesson learned: don’t be a nice guy when it comes to selling a car
“Certified checks” are often forged. You will NOT be able to take it to your bank and get cash for it, just deposit it (unless you have the $10G already in your account, in which case they will put a hold on the $10K already there). The postal money order can be taken to the PO and verified and cashed on the spot. Postal money order is $1,000 max, so you would need ten of them. They cost $1.35 a piece though, so a total of $13.50.

escro, wire, or cashiers check… Wait till money clears before providing vehicle. Also write up a contract and have him returned it sigined.
Things to note
Car is AS IS… No explicit or implied warranty. The vehicle will leave your house in condition described (Maybe have company transporting the vehicle sigin indicating that it is running).
Once vehicle leaves your posession you are no longer responsible for any failure of any system, or part of the vehicle.
Ask that the person sign this contract, and return it via mail or fax.
jay, do you still have that check? im almost positive that stop payments only last for 180days, then the guy would have had to renew the stop payment, most likely he will forget and you can cash the check and get your money
lol i read this in a book written by a past scam artist, its a way con artists used to scam ppl, book has so many good tips on how to avoid getting scammed, its called “the art of the steal”
you are correct its only good for a period of time. I dont remember exactly how long, but im pretty sure its only for a couple months.
