How to get rid of old hay?

When I bought my house I was cursed with a barn loft full of old hay. Probably several truckloads, and a lot of the bales have broken apart. I tried giving it away on Craigslist- no interest, except one lady who wanted to drive from Buffalo to get one scarecrow worth of the stuff, until she considered the cost of gas.:bloated: I tried burning some, and it just smolders and eventually burns, so it would take me a year to get rid of it that way. I don’t have a pickup either, so dropping it off somewhere is out. The mice love it, and I want to get the barn cleaned out before winter to get all of my stuff in there. Any ideas? I live in N Collins.

call the closest farm and tell them you have some hay you are trying to get rid of. I bet they could use it for something. chances are farmers dont go on craigslist looking for hay.

p/s. I have barn envy. lol

burn it!

WILLY…

clearly. i did not read.

in my defense… if you soak it in gas, it’ll burn.

I think we tried that at his house warming party. Or maybe it was lighter fluid… I have no idea. Ha.

try it again!.. if not… just donate it. salvation army LOVES hay.

I also heard that if you take an f-150 full of hay to wegmans, they give you a free keg.

HAHAHAHAH.

Seriously, call the SPCA.

They can use it for the horses, they have a lot of other animals besides dogs and cats there.

If it’s old animals can’t eat it I guess. Good call on the farms though- I’m surrounded by them. Trust me, if it burned well it would be long gone. A few alcohol-fueled nights and we made short work of the remains of an old outbuilding that had fallen down behind the barn.

Yeah if its old then they wont take it. It could hurt the animals because it may have mold and fungus that you dont even know about. If there isn’t a shitload of it, you could spread it out in the field. It’ll quickly decompose plus birds, squirrels, etc will pick it up for dens and nest.

You can use gas like others mentioned and it should burn, some used oil would work too keeps the fire blazing, lol.

Put it on freecycle.

You dont have a spot where you could dump it on your own land? I would imagine in North Collins you would have plenty of spare land that your not using.

Old hay like that is full of bugs, mice crap ect… not what you would want animals bedding in. Best bet if find someone who needs it for there law or call the town, they may take it to use on Misc crap

I have about 15 gallons of used motor oil you can have. Put hay in a big pile out on the back of your property, dump on oil, light.

You get rid of your hay, I get rid of my oil. Win win.

I also have a few gallons to donate if needed.

I think you just need a bigger hammer to get rid of this stuff.

Enough accelerant will burn this away!

try a place that does landscaping
alot of places will cover new grass in hay
to protect the seed from animals and keeps the moisture on the ground
i dont think they will use it now though

what about haunted hay rides? it is that time of the season…
