South Korean automakers Hyundai Motor America and Kia Motors America overstated the fuel economy on nearly a million late model vehicles and will issue owners special debit cards to reimburse the extra money they are paying for fuel.
The error was announced Friday by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which monitors the fuel economy tests by automakers.
The mileage on most vehicle labels will be reduced by 1 to 2 miles per gallon, and the largest adjustment will be 6 mpg highway for the Kia Soul, federal regulators said. Both automakers will place new labels reflecting the corrected mileage estimates on cars currently at dealers.
Looks like I’ll get a yearly debit card for the 1mpg + 15% they overstated on my Veloster. I think someone posted on here on an earlier thread that its a known fact Hyundai’s mpg estimates were off.
 to fixing the problem though - plus I found my highway mileage to be closer to 40 than 37 as the EPA states.
Manufacturer submits data to the EPA. EPA audits. Customers complain, alot, and things like this happen. The big thing here is that it will ultimately lower their CAFE rating some which should deduct from the tax credits if any they received for being over the EPA’s currently set MPG standard.
Yeah it doesn’t boil down to a lot individually. I think my wife said we’re getting like $60 back from Hyundai from her 2012 Tucson for this past year. Better than nothing though!
