so this is a car forum right? we have all these political experts for both sides and no one is calling out the latest bill that is trying to be passed today?
WASHINGTON – With two of Detroit’s Big Three automakers no longer able to resist, the Obama White House will announce sped-up fuel economy standards that will require all auto-makers, including Detroit’s foreign competitors, to increase fleet fuel efficiency by 5 percent per year starting in 2012.
Good. We needed a benchmark in the first place. If the US Government would’ve enacted standards to begin with, the collapse of the auto industry, the truck/suv mpg debacle, could have been curbed.
broski, it was an issue, read the second paragraph of your link:
“But senior Republicans said the plan was unfair to struggling U.S.-based auto companies that depend on sales of less efficient sport utility vehicles and pickups.”
hell, they wanted to help the failing US big three! Republicans don’t want to limit emissions… how would they drive around texas in their big old caddys with longhorns on the hood?
“Environmental and consumer organizations, as well as some powerful lawmakers in the Democratic-controlled Congress, say reducing gas use is the quickest way to cut fuel use.”
I don’t see why this is a good thing? I guess it’s something the federal government should have it’s hand in? nationalizing anything isn’t really the point of the government, but seems to be the thought behind all this. It’s funny to see the contrast of articles between sources.
oh well… it’s out of our hands. It’s funny to read the article that says they have domestic buy in, when the government is now the owner of these ‘bought in’ domestic producers… kind of dumb to comment on them buying in, they are the ones proposing it.
the more the government has it’s hands in, the worse off we all are. If people want to buy cars that get 3 mpg, then the manufacturers should make cars that get 3 mpg. If the consumer demands 50mpg, then the manufacturer should work towards that. I don’t see how the gov getting involved is going to be better for anyone.
because both the consumer and manufacturers are too fucking stupid to get it on their own. And again I say, the A in CAFE stands for AVERAGE. You can still have some gas hogs, you just have to balance them out with higher efficiency models in other classes. Vettes get like 30mpg so don’t even whine about sports cars being on the road to extinction. If this keeps Suzy Q. Soccermom from buying a fucking land yacht to truck her one kid to and from school and her own fat ass to and from the mall, then good… fuck her!
The government isn’t protecting people from themselves in this case; it’s protecting people from corporations that if left unchecked would’ve utterly destroyed our ecosystem with pollution 80 years ago. There’s nothing “bad” here, unless you like smog and small ozone layers.
Pittsburghs air is cleaner than it ever was and so is 99% of the country…who gives a fuck about smog in LA, etc…i hope cali falls in the ocean soon anyway. there was a time when air quality was an issue as was water pollution… things dont not need to keep goin the way they are goin. all this 'Green" shit eliminates more jobs than it creates…
fuck zippy
this gives me more reason to wanna go out and waste gas and burn tire for no reason other than to create pollution.
So what is going to happen if the gov gets involved(more than it is already) and starts upping the cafe standards? I bet the manufacturers find another way around it and continue doing the same thing they have been doing for years, only now we will be wasting more taxpayer money and countless other BS than the manufacturers have to go through which will up the price of cars/trucks. my old 62 buick got the same gas mileage as my cars do now, that CAFE is sure working like a fucking charm.
The soccer moms will still have their 8 mpg suv’s regardless.
Um, what the fuck about this thread are you not understanding? they ARE upping the CAFE standards… Thats the whole point of the thread.
The environmental thing is a nice plus, but the real money maker on the deal is the national security aspect. Do you know what would happen if Russia, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, etc. were to up and decide that they are no longer going to sell us any of their oil? $4.50 gasoline would seem like the bargain of the century. It would go up to $20 per gallon, there would be huge shortages, riots, looting, the economy would grind to a fucking halt, etc.
Do YOU feel comfortable having the countries mentioned above having us by the balls? I don’t. If we could increase the average MPG of all vehicles by a 1 or 2 MPG is would be a HUGE impact on the disparity between foreign and domestic oil.
Moron.
Do it man. Show those motherfuckers. Put the GS in the garage, sit in that bitch with the garage door closed and rev it up to like 3 or 4K for an hour or so, then open that door and let one big fat cloud of smog out as a big FUCK YOU to Obama. Don’t worry if you start to feel relaxed, warm, and sleepy… just go with it. That’s Jesus trying to tell you you’re doing a good job.
Why the fuck would you care if companies had to make their cars slightly more efficent overall? Do you LIKE spending more money on gasoline? And it’s certainly not going to affect the hunks of shit that were made 30 years ago that you like to mess with.
actually i hope they move to strictly electric cars…that way i can get gas for my 30 year old hunks of shit for like 50 cents a gallon.
sure in theory it sounds nice to have cars more efficient but where does it stop at before you know it they got hemi cudas in crushers…The point is, how do you know the fairy isn’t a crazy glue sniffer? “Building model airplanes” says the little fairy; well, we’re not buying it. He sneaks into your house once, that’s all it takes. The next thing you know, there’s money missing off the dresser, and your daughter’s knocked up. I seen it a hundred times.
