“We’ve done the research and it’s going to cost us $4,000 on some vehicles and $10,000 on others, with an average of about $6,000,” Bob Lutz told reporters at the North American International Auto Show.
“That cost will have to be passed on to consumers,” Lutz, a long-time vocal critic of federal fuel regulations, said.
This will never, ever fly. I see people flocking towards imports if they try to pull this off.
And honestly, I hope it works. The Government needs to stay the fuck out of it for the most part.
Safety is one thing- but we know full fucking well that mileage means SHIT! Getting more miles per tank? people will drive more… it wont save a damn thing, and the oil cmpanies will just raise their prices. All its going to result in is a dead performance car market that is currently thriving, a bunch of new “taxes” that they can tack onto your new car, and a bunch of useless trucks that cant get out of their own fucking way…
And of course… a bunch of wrong directions into alternative fuel.
Well, we’ve already seen on direction that they’re going to take. By canceling a V8 in favor of a turbo V6 that will produce better numbers on paper. They have 12 years to design or improve on existing engines to boost the mpg figures. Its not even a huge increase, +10 mpg in most cases. The really hard hit are going to be their trucks.
Also the turbocharged direct injection Dual VVT ecotec 2.0L 4 cylinder (260 horsepower at 5300 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. of torque at 2500 rpm) is not a horrible engine.
its just corporate boasting / postiering (sp). It may have been more effective 10 years ago, because you won’t see the competitors making such noise so publicly.
When you have a shoot from the hip guy like Lutz in charge things like this happen. You need someone brash and slightly unstable to turn a company that was going completely in the wrong direction like GM around. You also need to get him good handlers so he doesn’t say stupid shit to the press, which apparently GM hasn’t figured out yet.
I still think the new guidelines aren’t going to be that hard to meet, especially given the long timetable. Put a couple plug in hybrids into your lineup and watch their insanely high EPA test loop numbers bring up the average of all your other vehicles.
