Forcefield has back protectors without belts/straps available for about a $100 so you can put them in the jacket pocket made for it. Makes me wish I bought one.
As far as mesh vs leather vs textile I cheated and bought Shift Hybrid which is a textile with leather panels around lower arms, shoulders, chest and back. Wore it with no issue all season into the near freezing temps.
