Insurance/Registration Question

I have an insurance policy in my own name now with GEICO. I came off my parents and families which was actually cheaper for me. The question is that I started this policy in August and my car is still registered to my Dad.

Am I at risk of getting my license suspended since the car is in my parents name and policy is in my own? Its just liability. No collision if that matters.

Pretty sure you can insure a car that is not registered to you. NYS only care that the vehicle is insured if it’s registered, which is why if you cancel the insurance the insurance company sends NY a notice about it and you get in trouble if the car is still registered.

I was told that the car I am insuring has to be registered under the policy holder… Maybe it varies by company, but I would call and double check

PM Pauly to figure this out…

My girlfriend came off her fathers insurance like last year. The car was titled in her name and her fathers.

It was registered under her fathers name.

We had to switch the registration into her name to get it insured under her own policy.

True. You don’t even have to own it.
