Registration/insurance Question

My car is currently registered and insured in NY. Im going to be going down to FL to visit one of my relatives and I had the idea of registering my car in FL so that I dont have to worry about inspection and emisions crap and my relative has OKed me to be on her insurance. Also I wouldnt have to worry about tint tickets since the car would have FL plates. My question is, what would I need to to to do this? Can I have the the title in my name and have it under her insurance? I know some people have situations worked out kinda like what I wanna do so any help that you can give would be great.

if its registered to you, you need to have a residence in that state.

I would be using her residence as my mailing address so it looks like I live there. Can a car be registered to me and insured through her?

I’m almost positive you can have a car registered to 1 person and insured through another. Mine are both different here.

i think if you have a car registered and insured in another state, you would need to bear that states driver’s license and surrender your NYS license for a florida one…but dont quote me on that, i could be wrong

yes u will have to pickup a FL drivers liscense

If I pickup a FL drivers liscense, do I have to surrender my NYS liscense? If I have to surrender it, who do I surrender it to and what happens if I dont give it to them?

what would you need your NYS liscense for?

What makes you think out of state plates will make cops not pull you over for having tinted windows? This seems like a bad idea.

Tint of any % is legal in FLA

it would be like expecting PA people to put front plates on before coming into NY

Cops here don’t care. They could still use it as a reason to pull you over. Then this dude has to make up all these elaborate stories about why his relatives car is up here, why is he up here driving it, etc… Not to mention what would happen if he ever got into an accident and had the insurance company looking into all of this.

Seems like a lot of hassle for tinted windows, and inspection. Inspection isn’t that hard to pass up here.

Exactly. Only reason that I would want a NYS liscense is becasue I am going to school here and dont I need to have my mailing address for school as the same one on my licesnse? Im not usre exactly how that works.

you give your NYS license to the FLA DMV and you get a florida license. If you dont give florida your NYS license, they wont give you a FLA. license. I dunno about the whole school address thing though. It just seems to me like you are going to go through a huge hassle just to not worry about Emissions, Inspections, and tints, but hey, who am I

florida still has a inspection. which means you would have to drive there once a year to inspect it. u have to have proof of residence there. so ur legal mailing address has to be there. not worth the hassle imo

K ya this doesnt seem worth it all. Thanx you all.

just go to the NY dmv and say you “lost” your drivers license

i used to wotk with some1 who did this because his parents lived in florida. he said he got in big troubble because his car was registered, insured and titled in Florida but he still had a NY licnese. this was apparently a problem and he had to get a Florida license. it wasnt really a problem for him because his parents owned 2 houese (one there and one here) s he jsut declared residency in Florida and jsut lived in the house up here. think for your case though, im not sure you could do that and just use your friends house as your address. if your parents or another relative owned a place down there, then u could easily say u lived there with them, but i dunno about your frinds. to me, it just seems to be a bigger pain in the ass and risk than its really worth. jsut thought id give some info from what i have heard

sherms got texas plates. i dunno if he has a texas id i would ask him

im pretty sure he has a TX license

you would have to have a residence in FL, and it would have to be registered to you in fl. You could get mail sent there… but then they would need to fwd to you. The problem with having the car insured to someone else is that they are liable for you which I wouldn’t do for anyone… if you got into an accident… they get sued… not you.
