I would like to see someone realize that the iphone is in no way some big fucking deal and all be all cell phone, their are a ton of phones out there on all networks that trump the iphone, hell even fuckin T-mobile has the G1, I love Apple but the iphone isn’t good enough or shiny enough to live up to all the hype and obsession, buy an ipod classic or touch and a BB and shut the fuck up
Yeah, I know enough about the tech to know that you’d need to get a copy of all the source for the iPhone itself, go through it line by line (probably in HEX, based on what you usually see from cracked stuff), and eliminate everything pertaining to the network connection, you’d have to open up the phone, cut the circuit-board apart to separate the parts that control the touch-screen, the processor, the memory and the battery from the transceiver, then you’d have to cut apart a CDMA 3G phone to get the CDMA transceiver, solder it in place, and redo all the wiring because they’re not interchangeable parts - you’d have to figure out how to physically line up the CDMA stuff with the iPhone internals, which also might require a purpose built adapter of sorts…
Then, you have to go into the source code and rewrite it so that it communicates with the CDMA chip, which will require a very, very strong working knowledge of the CDMA source code, since it’s not going to be as simple as just copy and pasting from one to the other… then you have to compile it, and load it onto the phone, and define the MEID/ESN.
I don’t think any college student did it, unless you mean an adult student working on dual PhDs in Software and Electrical Engineering, who worked high up in a technical aspect of design at a mobile company.
I hate Apple. I have an iPhone. I have worked a year in Wireless, I know just about every phone that’s compatible with the American market, and the iPhone has the best combination of features and interface for a mass-market user, by far.
Yeah, the G1 is pretty good. So is the Vu, and the BB Storm. The Voyager’s not bad, the HTC 6800 and 6900 are both great, but they’re good for different things, and none of them are as easy or streamlined to use as the iPhone. If you use your phone to make calls, find businesses, text message, e-mail, read attachments, make notes, take pictures, and listen to music, it is the absolute best phone on the market right now. It’s not perfect. It has flaws. It’s not right for everyone.
But I wish that people who really don’t know all that much about the reliability and usability of the cell-phone market would stop attacking iPhones based on the simple principle that Apple fanatics are really annoying (they are, I hate them).
and if your day involves sending pictures? y’know, that messaging technology thats been around for not much longer than picture phones? lol
honestly i’ll admit thats splitting hairs, i’m not saying the iphone is a bad phone, and depending on how you use it, it can definitely be the best, i just dont understand why people are soo hung up on it they need to even consider getting it on verizon, a BB, palm, or HTC will do you just as good
and after all that, you have to get the ESN loaded into the VZW database…
I suppose in theory you could pull it from the phone you raped to get the radio from…
to me, it’s about getting the best bang for your buck. If the HTC phone costs the same as the iphone, it gets frustrating that the iphone is a little better phone, but I can’t get it because it is a different carrier.
The problem with the cell phone market is that it is forcing people to settle for lesser products, constantly.
point being, it is virtually impossible. If you want the phone that badly, pay the cancellation fee and switch to AT&T
You can e-mail them, load them to facebook, etc. I don’t miss it at all. It’s probably their one remaining glaring omission, I’ll grant you that.
Well…not really… Just more hype but a really good breakdown of why you won’t see it anytime soon and why these new waves of rumors of faults. I am always entertained about how many of these fly around esp as July approaches when the new iPhone is coming out (aparently)
Breakdown? How far down can you break the concept of a 5 year contract with AT&T, or that VZW passed on it before apple went with AT&T?
CTS-V
That article sucks. As per the Harvard case study “iPhone vs Cell Phone” There are two reasons why the iphone isn’t on Verizon:
- Apple wanted a sucker to give them part of the profit from macfags’ monthly service contracts. They approached VZW first, VZW told them to pound salt, so Apple got AT&T to bite.
- Apple signed a 5 year exclusivity deal with AT&T.
Wasn’t there a thing with Verizon and Apple where one of them wanted more control over it?
I think its Apple wants more control over the device than Verizon would allow or vice versa?
I really wish it was on EVDO just for the theoretical speed difference but I haven’t had a problem with ATTs network so far. Even can download at 200KBps and like the roaming ability if needed.
The only major thing I know of that made Verizon pass on it was Apple demanding a fraction of the profit from the iPhone users’ monthly contracts, which Apple currently gets from AT&T.
Apple wanted a ton of control, along with a lot of cake.
that was my understanding. Apple approached sprint I think and sprint wanted their logo on the phone and apple didn’t like that
can you copy/paste text yet on an iphone? also, can you receive picture mail?
I just wonder if they went back in time if Verizon would still pass on the iPhone today. It’s brought a ton of business to AT&T and they didn’t hesitate to extend that contract for the 3g iPhone.
In our very small company (30ish people) I’ve seen 3 people switch to AT&T when their Verizon contract was up so they could get an iPhone.
HSDPA is faster than EVDO anyway. that article talks about edge which was the first gen.
I know my company switched to ATT and all the management and a few of us engineers have them.
Company paying for my bill and me just buying the phone made me drop Verizon. Back in the day when ATT’s coverage sucked I Would have never thought about it but now its the same in 99% of the areas I have been.
