I reaaaallllyyyyy want to make this part clear. [SIZE=3]This is not a thread to discuss the iphone and its pros/cons. This is a thread to talk about the reports of Apple looking to make a CDMA version.

Ok, so, my answer to the question “Like, OMG!! When do you, like, think, like VZW will get the iphone?? TEEHEE, TEEHEEHEE!!” has always been “Never”. It’s not because I enjoy being asked the same question all the god damned time, rather a couple other reasons, which will follow.
This article does not state what carrier a CDMA version will be going to, nor that they have started making them. It simply states that they are looking at a certain company to do the manufacturing for them. It could end up on Sprint too as a Wimax device (which would REALLLLYY put some strength behind wimax, but thats another debate).
I have a hard time even imagining the possibility that it will end up on VZW because VZW is just simply too fucking stubborn and childish to allow some other company that amount of control. Ranging from distribution to the plans to warranty issues to the app store and not being in control of those potential profits…the list goes on.
In terms of any bad blood between the two companies from past advertising… I doubt that would be a real issue.
Would it be a good move? Well, are you talking for apple, or one of the carriers?
For Apple? Sure, thats more customers you will get from people who cant get GSM service or wont leave their CDMA carrier. Apple’s end game is and always has been “we want to move more units / sell more downloads”.
For VZW? In theory yes. There are plenty of current customers asking for it, and plenty of people on GSM carriers looking to jump ship, but wont because they love their iphone. Also, a LTE enabled iphone would be great to launch their LTE network with it. However, VZW’s end game will be “How many more NEW subscribers will we get from this?”.
For Sprint, I think this might be a “do or die” move. Launch it with Wimax. We all know about sprints customer battles, this would get them a lot of new subs on decent ARPU plans. Sprint will be a lot more open and flexible to meeting apple’s demands (vs VZW). However, VZW just has too much bloody money, and if they want to flex some muscle, they’ve got it available if they want to throw it around.
Gah, I dont know. Everything in me says “NOOOO!!!” but I’m sure they [vzw] are taking a serious look at it.
Discuss, INTELLIGENTLY.
[SIZE=1](Quick recap of me: I’ve been doing VZW for…6-7 years now? in some way/shape/form. For the past 2 I’ve been managing their B2B distribution channel at Ingram (to put it simply). Anyone that knows me knows that I’m a phone nerd, and am more than qualified to speak on this subject.)
