Overview

5th April 2010 10:44 EST WikiLeaks has released a classified US military video depicting the indiscriminate slaying of over a dozen people in the Iraqi suburb of New Baghdad – including two Reuters news staff.

Reuters has been trying to obtain the video through the Freedom of Information Act, without success since the time of the attack. The video, shot from an Apache helicopter gun-site, clearly shows the unprovoked slaying of a wounded Reuters employee and his rescuers. Two young children involved in the rescue were also seriously wounded.

The military did not reveal how the Reuters staff were killed, and stated that they did not know how the children were injured.

After demands by Reuters, the incident was investigated and the U.S. military concluded that the actions of the soldiers were in accordance with the law of armed conflict and its own “Rules of Engagement”.

Consequently, WikiLeaks has released the classified Rules of Engagement for 2006, 2007 and 2008, revealing these rules before, during, and after the killings.

WikiLeaks has released both the original 38 minutes video and a shorter version with an initial analysis. Subtitles have been added to both versions from the radio transmissions.

WikiLeaks obtained this video as well as supporting documents from a number of military whistleblowers. WikiLeaks goes to great lengths to verify the authenticity of the information it receives. We have analyzed the information about this incident from a variety of source material. We have spoken to witnesses and journalists directly involved in the incident.

WikiLeaks wants to ensure that all the leaked information it receives gets the attention it deserves. In this particular case, some of the people killed were journalists that were simply doing their jobs: putting their lives at risk in order to report on war. Iraq is a very dangerous place for journalists: from 2003- 2009, 139 journalists were killed while doing their work.

That shit is reckless man. Listen to how anxious these guys sound “Come on let me shoot!” wtf. They just want to shoot and ask questions later. This bullcrap happens every single day.

If there were not Reuters dudes involved this would never see the light of day.

Makes you wonder how many dozens of these situations are sitting under the rug.

towards the end a guy says “Well it’s their fault for bringing their kids to a battle”… It’s pretty damn accurate, yet so many available arguments.

In the end, regardless of opinions, it boils down to the fact that war is hell.

Could be worse… they could go back to the days of carpet bombing like in WWII

Them firing on the van was a little ridiculous. no weapons were in sight that shouldn’t have happened.

my understanding of ROE is that you have to be fired upon before you can engage a target. must have changed since I went through all the training.

That was before they changed over to the Dick Cheney ruleset. If you fuck up, say you thought they were deer.

Amen.

When you have an enemy who hides among a civilian population these things happen. You can hear in the video they say they have weapons, mistaking the cameras for weapons. A group of insurgents were in the area attacking our troops at the time.

A little less biased version:

Even Reuters isn’t blaming the soldiers:

And Reuters said the deaths of Chmagh and Noor-Eldeen “were tragic and emblematic of the extreme dangers that exist in covering war zones.”

Did you forget NYSpeed doesn’t care about collateral damage? http://www.nyspeed.com/showthread.php?79139-Blackwater-executives-approved-bribes-after-07-shootings

It’s war man, get over it.

That’s right the american enemy came amongst civillians invaded, occupied, started wrecking shit from day one. No one wants the US in Iraq. Gtfo.

The weapons of mass messing with lies have been depleted.

Bottom line GTFO

I think we should stay there and shoot people until they all are eating cheeseburgers at McD’s.

It’s not about a place to do it, but where it’s coming from. You’re in a leadership postion so you need to consider how what you post can reflect & effect what we’re trying to do here.[/QUOTE]

moved this to members chat on SON only… i thought it was pretty important but yeah probably not a good idea to put it out there in the network section
