You mean to tell me there aren’t any main highways between seattle and san francisco? He was taking a scenic route through a snow storm, great move. There is no way I’m going to feel bad for him, his kids and his wife yes, but not him. I feel worse for the kids getting shot at overseas, at least they aren’t there cause they made a wrong turn on vacation cause they wanted pretty pics of pine trees.
i take back part of what i said
They attempted to take a shortcut over roads that can be impassable in winter.
I take back part too then, seems that it wasn’t for pretty pics. Sucks that the guy died but it was just a bad move.
Definately sad for many reasons.
Do they know how he died yet?
I heard on the TV that they found bear tracks following his!
That might explain why he left the road.(?)
Dehydration and hypothermia both cause poor judgement.
The odds were against him for sure.
he should have watched more episodes of survivor man.
HAHHA
I think the problem is most of the people here have no idea what it’s like to be in a real wilderness area, let alone a mountainous wilderness area. You take off on a road trip to go to Syracuse and make a wrong turn and you can’t drive for a minute without seeing a house. You take a wrong turn out there, and get on a twisting labyrinth of unmarked logging roads and you could get lost quick, especially in a snow storm. His route didn’t plan to go through that area, and he did have a map. The problem is once you completely lose your bearings and end up on unmarked roads a map is useless.
Sure, easy to say he should have a GPS, but I’d guess at least 90% of drivers don’t have a GPS so he’s clearly in the majority. had he planned to go into the wilderness I bet he would have bought one, but when you’re planning a highway trip to stay at a resort it doesn’t seem like a must have.
From the cnn.com article:
Driving south on Interstate 5, the Kims had missed the turnoff to the coast and instead drove through the Siskiyou National Forest.
Looking at google maps it looks like one of the main N-S routes to me.
Think of it this way, if he was stil with his family, they all may have died due to lack of supplies ect.
And Cellphones do no good when you are in the remote mountains out west. You’re talking about snowstorms unlike anything that happens around here, and many miles inbetween roads.
Plus, snowstorms in the mountains are hundreds of times more unpredictible than WNY snow. Shit can get wild really fast.
You ever been driving somewhere and take a wrong turn?
Oh, I forgot, NYSpeed members are all perfect.
The difference between a wrong turn here and a wrong turn in the backcountry is a wrong turn can kill you quick out there. Nature doesn’t fuck around.
They also think he was forced/runnning from a bear into the creek
The thing I don’t get is…
Have you ever seen a tire burn?
How did no one find these people faster?
Well, was the tire burning when someone was even looking for them, or looking in even the remotely right area?
Sad story. I really feel bad for his family. Tramping around the sticks in SNOW without a compass or any sort of knowledge sucks.
Just another reason my Garmin Streetpilot is always in my car. Because I know I will be that guy getting lost in the sticks.
Fuck that.
If Garmin don’t get it (as in able to plot route), I ain’t goin’ .
Damn that’s a good line, maybe Garmin will pay me for it. SUPERBOWL COMMERCIAL!
Or Garmin could just do a commercial with a family arriving at grandma’s, then fade to his ass frozen solid in a stream, and close it with, “Without a Garmin, you could be this asshole”.
Sorry, I just got back from an open bar company christmas party (my wife’s company where I don’t know anyone so all I basically did was drink) and I think my pity for fellow human beings guage is disabled.
:word:
with so many fucking people in the world, at least he provided an example so that everyone else could live that much longer. since the world needs as many people as possible
EDIT: heros rule, but waking up tomorrow is pretty nice too
i dont car what anyone says, any man, woman, child that sacrifices their life to help ones own family is a hero in my book
10/10
didnt they say he was on his way back to his car about 1/2 mile away from the car at the base of a ledge/rivine when he was found? that sucks big time
