JayS, AWD, Political Crew: Why do we cap SS tax?

i know that taxes are there for a reason, and there needs to be a control of it…but why the hell should bust my ass my whole life for(fill on as far as people go…white trash…blacks…hispanics…illegal imm.) for them?
I know people get it hard growing up bud give them choices, young, they can’t amke a choice i say screw them let them not collect off my dime

How about for the people that bust their ass their whole life and can’t save to retire?

My point of this thread is simple:

You pay 6% on the first 97,500 you make; after that it’s SS tax free. Now there are people in my office who probably wont ever make over 97,500 (adjusted) a year (but will be close) and at the same time won’t ever take part in social security b/c they set up 401k, IRA, etc… etc…

Over the next 20 years they will have paid a massive proportional difference in SS tax than someone making $10,000,000 a year. Neither groups will use SS; but those who can afford the tax most will pay the least proportionally. That just makes no sense to me.

It’s a totally unfair tax on the middle class.

I don’t know if Joe and Joe are big smart asses or big idiots when they take what I say to the most extreme point possible.

Then what do you want? You haven’t told me. You say “Let us keep our money” what does that mean? That you want taxes but only for things YOU want? Think about how silly that sounds.

I have a pretty short “to do” list for the government. Even with the inflated rates paid to public sector employees, the ineficiencies of a large organization, etc. we would have much lower overall tax bill, a better economy, and more freedom if the government stuck to doing what it should be doing and got the fuck out of the rest of it.

The government has become way too powerful and has way too much influence over people’s individual freedoms. The government is here to make sure we are not attacked, and to take care of infrastructure and some other things. NOT control everything we do. They tax the money we earn, they tax the things we buy, they tax us to support other people who can’t support themselves, they tax us for damn near everything we do. Don’t get me wrong, I am not against taxes, they are needed to pay for the things that keep our country running…but there are way too many fucking taxes. Say my father dies tomorrow and leaves me $500,000 in his will. The government comes in at takes nearly 50% of it. What gives them the right? what gives the government the right to take from the pockets of the working man to give it to the non workers? I’m sorry, but if I work my ass off to put myself through college, get a good job, and work hard to make a good income, that is MY money. I should pay taxes to keep the basic infrastructure and other basic needs to keep the country running. I should not be taxed to give to those who blew off their education and were too lazy to do something about their life. There is nothing wrong with helping out people that are down on their luck. But the amount of money taken from the pockets of men and women who have worked their asses off to become something, just to give it to those who have done nothing for themselves but bitch and complain about how hard life is and how its not fair and hold out their hands like they are begging for scraps…its fucking ridiculous. The government hands out money and free shit like it were candy on Halloween. Politicians keep the people sucking on the tit of the government to keep themselves in power and look good. But who pays for it? WE DO! They claim that they want to “help” everyone by trying to run everybody’s life. All we have to do is keep filling their pockets and they will keep handing out “freebies” that we paid for. Its a good thing we have the government to take our money and waste it for us…or else I wouldn’t know what to waste it on.

jeg, didn’t we cover the people are poor because they are lazy topic enough times in this thread already. it’s an ignorant position to argue from.

but one more time… it’s cheaper and better on society to help people regardless of how much they fucked up then to cause a huge crime wave by making this people into criminals which is what happens when they are on the street with nothing.

I guess I’ve been arguing for pure capitalism in this thread, but I didn’t leave work till late last night and one of the night-crew cleaners was a guy about 75 years old pushing a vacuum. Real gentleman too, quietly shut my office door so as to not disturb me before he started vacuuming. Maybe he drank his life away, maybe he spent his life savings on medical bills trying to save his wife. I don’t know.

If the system worked better so that the leeches of society had to get a job and he could stay home I’d happily pay my taxes.

I dunno. It’ll never be perfect. I just hope it gets better.

The part I highlighted is the problem. You don’t know his story. So without knowing it the story just pointlessly plays on people’s emotions. My grandparents were able to put away a huge retirement nest egg and he was a gym teacher and she was a bus driver. They saved, paid cash for most things, invested well, and spent money smartly. I joke that my grandfather has probably never eaten a fresh donut because you can’t open the new box until the old ones are finished. But that save, save, save mentality is why they aren’t living off the state.

How many people on NYSpeed are going to be broke or working until the day they die because they spend way too much on toys while not putting much at all into retirement planning. I’ve love to cut back on my 401k contributions and spend some more money on my house/car, but I don’t because I know I don’t want to be cleaning someone’s office when I’m 75.

but it just doesn’t matter… there are so many reasons why people end up old and without money… some within their control, others outside of their control (maybe a serious health issue ate all their money).

social security’s beauty is that you can’t abuse it ahead of time.

I have a guy like that here. Ground / maintenance crew. 82 yrs old, widower, vietnam vet. His wife died ~20 yrs ago.

He doesn’t need to work, but he comes here part time to plow the lot, fix the HVAC, mow the grass, etc… because he was bored at home by himself. Kids & grandkids live in the mid-west, but he doesn’t want to leave the house he built.

No it doesn’t. The estate tax only applies to over $3 million (So if you got 3.5 million only $500K would be taxed). Not to mention life insurance payments are tax free.
