Jeeps

Well, it is called the moose test. Maybe something can be inferred from that.

Wow.

This has been debunked… This test could not be replicated once Chrysler engineers arrived to personally witness the test setup and test conditions.

"Grand Cherokee Statement for Teknikens Varld Test

Chrysler Group engineers are investigating a Swedish magazine’s evaluation of the 2012 Grand
Cherokee. During the evaluation, the publication was able to capture images of a Grand Cherokee on two wheels as it performed an extreme maneuver in an overloaded condition.

Advised of this event by the magazine, Chrysler Group engineers made numerous attempts to
reproduce the wheel-lift in a properly loaded vehicle. Extensive testing produced no such result.
A subsequent evaluation was conducted by the magazine July 8 in Sweden and witnessed by Chrysler Group engineers. Three vehicles performed 11 runs on a course prepared by the magazine. None reproduced the original event.

The uncharacteristic result was obtained using a vehicle loaded beyond its weight specifications. The Grand Cherokee’s weight limitations are clearly stated on the vehicle and in the owner’s manual. Also, the extreme maneuver performed by the magazine is not certified by any regulatory agency, nor is it used to establish any sanctioned safety ratings.
Chrysler Group takes seriously any safety concerns and engineers are examining the event to better understand the magazine’s claims.

A “Top Safety Pick” of the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 2012 Grand Cherokee is an award-winning SUV that features Electronic Stability Control and Electronic Roll Mitigation as
standard equipment. It meets or exceeds all government safety mandates and its outstanding
performance has made it the most awarded SUV in history."

Debunked by what? The video that shows tires blowing after Chrysler engineers were allowed to modify the test to their standards? How can they say “None reproduced the original event” when it’s clearly on video. :gotme:

Due to a complete incorrect statement by Chrysler, many people believe that we performed the first moose test with 50 kilos (110 lbs) overload in the Jeep Grand Cherokee. This is not the least bit true. We performed the first moose test with 100 kilos (220 lbs) less than the maximum payload (602 kilos/1 327 lbs) that is registered for the car, a figure which officially comes from Jeep/Chrysler.

Also:

I read both reports, and in my article about the first Jeep Grand Cherokee moose test, I included comments from both Teknikens Värld and Jeep. Regarding the last test, the Jeep guys said that the car was overloaded, but the Teknikens Värld testers told me what they had loaded the car with. It was within the specifications listed by the manufacturer.

As far as the German magazine’s claim that their Swedish counterparts engaged in all kinds of weird driving stuff to make the load shift, well, that could be true, but have you seen most people drive, especially when they’re attempting to react to an emergency situation? I personally think that most drivers (including myself at times) are barely competent, so taking issue with the way the tester was driving during the test is splitting hairs.

So far, I don’t have reason to buy into the conspiracy theory that Teknikens Värld has it in for Chrysler and wants to make the Grand Cherokee look bad. That’s the only plausible explanation, at this point, for them rigging the test, which is what some folks seem to be suggesting. It’s a possibility, but so is Jimmy Hoffa still being alive in a cabin on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. But without real evidence …

Ran the jeep tonight for laughs

Tried this with full automatic on, shitty reaction time mostly cause i wasn’t paying attention

I did better on the second run with a .6 reaction, however i was playing with its slap shift mode… it ran a 10.69 on that run.

Next week i’ll try again with the fully automatic on and get some better R/T’s

And drag race it.

It’s a stock SUV and an 1/8th mile track. If that’s “racing” most people driving to work every day could say they were racing.

MOOSE TEST!

@1:08

And the reason why they have such a test…

Unlike deer, you are much better off swerving for a moose.

I didn’t say it was good racing.:bush:

Word. Deer avoid wolves by waiting till the last second then darting out of the way. Moose avoid wolves by being way the fuck bigger.

Deer will get out of your way. Moose don’t give a fuck.

Speaking of Moose… out here in UT they’re all over the Canyons that I have to drive through to get to the ski resorts, typically there’s one or two accidents a year with cars Vs. Moose… They’ll also get into the middle of the road and just stand there and block the road until they feel like moving.

we live in wny.

why are we discussing Moises again?

Shouldn’t have bought a Jeep because it failed a Swedish moose test!

The one guy has almost 800K on his '99 300M now (although he did have to put an engine in at 640K.)

My '99 was strong at 185K when it was totaled. Only thing it needed was an AC compressor. I still like my big fat Chrysler, even though my current one isn’t as trouble-free as my first.

Always a bunch a year up here in VT as well. And from my experience of seeing a few crossing the road, they do not give a single fuck. Making matters worse, they are attracted to the roads because they lick the salt.

Moose/car collisions are UGLY.

Will snap pics tomorrow of the retired work van that was just replaced that is in the 250-270 range if I recall.
