That’s for the info guys. I’ll look into both of these options. Need to do something. I don’t want to have to do that every winter.
I blame this thread for running my ceiling!!!
3 years of no issues and come home tonight from dinner to a leak in my living room. S OF A B.
A hammer and flat bar works well. The sooner you get it gone, the sooner the water stops coming in. Even just removing as much snow as you can to start with helps.
By the time I got home, the leak had occurred and stopped. I am guessing the water backed up to the skylight and came in at the flashing.
I was reading the reviews and these work very well, however a lot of the reviews note a skyrocketing electric bill, but it still might be worth it.
Can anybody recomend a contractor or roofer to come out and give an estimate? We just closed on our house in Akron and during our final walk through found leakes in the roof, which is now to the point of raining inside the house. The roof was cleared yesterday but still have water coming in.
The more you post the more the engineering in your user name is lolz
Have been checking all of my west side houses the last few weeks. No leaks whatsoever. Since I can guarantee I have no ice shield and haven’t done any ice removal, i’m going to surmise that the steep pitch of the roofs and generous overhangs along with excellent venting (100+ year old construction and lots of 3rd floor loose original windows) doesn’t allow ice dams to form even in these conditions.
Couldn’t someone setup a computer in their attic, run MS Paint to resize a 1MP image to poster size and use the heat produced to melt all the things? #justengineeringstuff
We had a production meeting this morning and are now turning down all interior insurance estimates for the time being. It’s had a serious effect on out business.
My boss called in today because he has major water coming in through his ceiling. This was after paying a company $500 to clear the ice dams on his entire roof 2 weeks ago.
Where can I find these salt tablets locally. I would like to buy some today.
You can’t and Home Depot on transit is out of all rock salt.
I amazon primed rocksalt and ordered those tablets offline
I got lucky with the tablets the other day. I was getting ready to leave lowes and I saw them wheeling a pallet out. Before they had it unwrapped completely, several people removed most of the top layer of buckets. I grabbed one, and I am very surprised how well they are working. Wished I grabbed more than one though.
Has anyone installed the de-icing wire to their roof? I grabbed some to add once mine finally melts off enough.
This is awesome, might help out the MIL.
I’ve installed de-icing cable before. They work real good although I’ve replaced more than installed new so I’m not quite sure how long they last.
I’ve had some people tell me they work great, but when the temperatures drop to sub zero, they aren’t effective anymore.
Biggest piece of advice is to just get the snow off your roof. Most people don’t realize the snow turns to ice, expands into the shingles and melts when it reaches into the house. If you get most of the snow off, you will have very minimal issues.
So I finished the new ceiling walls and flooring in my large family room. I was not paying attention to the ice dams and when i came home the other night my ceiling was dumping water. all total I have had about 15 gallons of water enter the house. I have dealt with the issue (sledgehammer) and now the water has stopped but I will have to replace a good amount of drywall on the ceiling. Owning a carpet extractor likely saved the flooring and sub floor from water damage.
When I called my insurance company they found a HUGE mistake in my policy, well several. The biggest is that I have a $2600 deductible!!! WTF. I said are there any other mistakes, and she came back and said that my house is insured for less than its value! I asked for 1.5x value. Bastards. Since I called to inform them I am stuck on the high deductible as it would apply to this claim so I basically get to fix all of this out of my pocket. FML.
All that said looking into the root cause is a great place to start. Even before I hacked the ice out I went up to the attic and found that when they insulated the stuffed it all into the soffits thus blocking the vents. I hate cleaning up and paying for other peoples mistakes.
I have a bunch of water coming in. Fuck it, it’s above my sink so I don’t need a bucket and I’ll file a claim tomorrow. Nothing I can do about it until it warms up anyways.
EDIT - A bunch as in a bucket a week. Not 15 gallons an hour.
