Keeping tabs on an NA

Dumb question, but i have a few LONG road trips coming up, I wanna keep tabs on my motor just so i can get off the road before disaster strikes, Thinking about oil pressure and coolant gauge, Anyone have any ideas that will actually be usefull to keep tabs on my car.

its not supposed to be ricy or anything or even for athetics i dont really care, as i just said i just want to keep tabs.e

I’ve been on a few long drives and have been gunning my car but I’ve never used any gauges. Is there a reason why you are considering getting them? That is, do you have any problems with over heating? Other than that your stock temp gauge should be fine. If you want to be extra carefull, every few hundred k’s just pull over and check your oil. And just carry some extra cases of oil and coolant with you.

its just an older engine, and i would much rather beable to say hey shit somthings wrong slow down and pull over and let it cool down, fill oil, ect ect instead of having to tow to a shop and get a new motor in halifax

The odds of you overheating on the highway in -15 weathers is almost impossible. If you have a cooling problem you would already know about it because it would more than likely happen in stop-n-go city driving.

As for your oil pressure…if you are that worried…save your money and just plan an extra 2 minutes at each fillup to check the level.

What I’m trying to say is don’t worry so much. Unless your car is already giving you prblems you should be okay…

Save your cash and have a few extra beers when you get there.

ah this is gonna be in the summer, but yea im just gonna take precautions.

over the summer i am going From whitby to windsor, and back, and back again then from windsor to toronto to halifax if all goes as planed then back to whitby, then back to windsor. in about 6 days so.

Overheating and oil pressure eh?..

exact two parameters in which I have worried about on my old motor. Doubt your oil pump will fail, why not opt for a new water pump. At any rate, try like a 30% coolant 70% water mix and a thicker oil. Or water wetter and amsoil oil for some highest temperature/hi shear viscosity oil on the market?

Halifax NS? I’ll gonna be headin to NFLD come July in my old 280,000KM KA so good luck.

Just change your fluids the week before and you’ll be fine. Make sure you change your oil after the long trip…

Sorry why would you use a leaner mixture, if he’s worried about over heating, shouldn’t he use more coolant. Coolant is supposed to increase the boiling point of the water it’s mixed with. So by adding more water than coolant you are actually doing the opposite. And also more water could hypothetically cause build up of water vapours in areas that extra hot. So I’m not too sure why you would want more water?

BUZZZZZ

Wrong answer.

Coolant keeps your water from FREEZING. Coolant will actually BOIL faster than water.

Water is BAR NONE the best “coolant” (cooling agent). Most race cars will run 100% water and a little anti-rust additive.

The problem is water freezes. When water freezes, it expands. So if you were to run straight water, overnight, you’d crack your engine block.

I thought that the antifreeze also increased the surface tension of the water thus reducing bubbles.

Adding a high presure rad cap will raise the boiling point of your coolant.

the best combonation of ethylene glycol(green) you can have is 50/50. although mr. 200 is right about pure coolant boiling faster, when mixed in a 1:1 ratio the boiling point is actually raised a bit. make sure your rad cap is in working order. for every 1 psi in the cooling system the boiling point is raised a little over 2 degrees, so make sure it holds adiquite pressure. a 15psi rad cap will raise boiling point just over 30degrees. if your really anal about ur car over heating you could always get it flused and filled with propalyne glycol (usually orange/red in color) which has a higher boiling point then green stuff.

REALLY? :squint:

I ripped the shit out of my old 240sx… 24/7… long trips to windsor and back twice a week for a few months… no problems ever… i also had what i believed as one of the strongest SOHC’s around tho… some ppl on this board can vouch for that.

if people wanna talk shit about adam cuz of his rsx go ahead…
but hes right, his SOHC was immaculate, like mine…

even on my old sohc, ive never had major problems except blowing clutches and overheating… its winter so it shouldnt happen

save your money. your sohc should do its job

just keep on the ignition/fuel/oil/fluids and it should be fine.
maybe a compression test to be safe.

Brandon i’ve tried contacting you on msn a few times… no replies… we should smoke a doob… you still haven’t seen my acura :expressionless: how’s your project 240 going?
