Basically just chiming in my experiences with Klispies Automotive machine shop in hamburg.
They are trying to charge me $300 for magnafluxing a crank, and line boring a engine block. Doesn’t that seem a bit excessive? I have built another motor through there before and I don’t recall it being so expensive. Additionally, every time I go there the estimate seems awfully optimistic compared to the end result…
Anyone have any comparable substitutes? I don’t think it’s reasonable to have over $1000+ tied up into machine work alone.
i can understand somewhere around 100 bucks to check the crank.
at northeast to have a set of 8 rods checked and fit cleaned up, its about 100 bucks. i believe it was around 400 for a linebore, .030 bore and cleaning on my friends sbc block.
when i had my sbc bored and hot tanked at spinna’s i think pat charged me like 50 bucks lol…i miss that guy. he was awesome.
Yea they kind of have you bent over a barrell, you cant do it yourself and there are not many places around here so i guess you gotta pay if you wana play type deal…sucks
From an inside perspective this is a job any shop can’t just go and handle. I know this shop is quite small and nothing like any of our stores but I’d bet you wouldn’t be able to find too many places to do it even for $300 anymore. I can’t imagine how much it would cost in a larger shop that was more specific to motorsports.
I would thank them for taking such good care of you. Line boring is not cheap. Cutting the caps and making the bore round again to precision tolerance takes skill, time and expensive tooling.
So if you think it is so expensive why don’t you go out and buy all the equipment and do it yourself? Then, mess up a bunch of times until you figure out what you’re doing. The end result will be much cheaper.
Tell Klispies that. I’m sure he’ll toss and turn at night unable to fall asleep as you think $1000 in machine work is reasonable. If I was looking to have precision machine work done, I’d want the cheapest most inexperienced shop doing it for me.
One of the main issues is that you have a girdle built into the main caps. So it’s not like just cutting the caps individually. He will have to get creative in how he holds this in a mill, indicates them in and then cuts the caps.
Most likely what will happen, if he has a line bore and hone in his shop, is your block is going to get a slight hone. There really should be no reason to line bore the engine unless of course it is off and unless it was damaged I don’t see the point.
Ask them if they have the capability to do this in house. Many shops send this over to Napa on Wherle.
You already posted once showing your position. Not sure why you insist we all need your negativity but at least keep it to a minimum. We can only handle so much Krantism per day.
When was the last work you had done there performed? I only ask because sometimes it’s easy to forget just how quick costs can rise in just a few years time for the same (or similar) type of services. I have nothing to add for the actual specifics of the work being done, just that I’ve been guilty of questioning prices under similar circumstances. But then I just realize that times have changed and things are never as “cheap” as they used to be.
No not necessarily, they are notorious for over grinding cranks. It’s just that they are one of the larger shops with a good amount of capability in the area. The other large shop would be northeast but they are just a reproduction shop, not a precision shop.
