That car is gorgeous! Your dad sure has good taste! I’ve seen an earlier vintage vette roaming the streets of Beamsville black, side pipes, etc…
man, your dad went serious on this one!
beautiful car, make yours beat it
Oh really!! haha ok Dusty… get the digs in while you can.
Thanks for the kind words on the vette.
Richard, I have seen that car around town too but do not know the guy. My dad didn’t want the side pipes, especially in a roadster. They are extremely loud when your cruising through town. He also didn’t want the big block hood, this one looks classier I think.
MP/B240, Our numbers will actually be very close… The vette has 300hp and 360tq. I’m looking for 300hp in the 240, and my torque I’m sure will be very close to 360 too… it will be interesting, but I’m sure that he will never race me. I doubt he’ll even take it down the 1320… and his decision would be justified in my mind. All this thing needs is a nice windy road with trees leaning over the road and leaves flying up in its wake
Turbo-Fire!!!
dayummmmm
nice piece!
Ya, too bad I didn’t have a camera that could do it justice.
Anywho… I have a little update this week.
My dad is using all of his engine stands currently, so I figure I need my own. Off to Princess Auto I go, only to find the typical crap, so I grabbed a set of wheels with a couple castors.
Next I stopped in to a machine shop in Stoney Creek that also sells various pieces of metal and grabbed 12 feet of 2.5" square tubing and 2 pipes that fit into each other for the rotating assembly.
I figure I’ll have about $50-$60 into it by the time I pick up some hardware and scavenge a couple steel plates, and it will be quite a bit sturdier than the flimsy power fist one.
I would have gotten a lot more work done today but I had to move the engine along with the hoist to the rear shop to work on… this was much more involved than it sounds as I was by myself and it’s a gravel driveway from one to the other. BUT, the back shop has heat!! Oh, and I got a hair cut
i like where this is going… =D
K finally time for an update.
The stand is DONE!! Ok, well it’s not painted yet, but I was thinking of marking it up with a grinder and clear coating it.
Where can yo buy durable clear in a spray can?
Alright, on to the pics.
I pulled some 1/4" plate from the scrap bin at school and did some shearing.
Angled top and bottom of the upright post, welded and drilled the gusset plates, fitted the tube for weldment, cut dial plate to 6.5", layed out and drilled the positioning holes.
Welded on the outer tube
I then decided to cut out the middle of the plate so I could mount it a little inboard rather than having it just welded onto the back of the tube. This was tricky because I wanted to keep the unwanted rotating (slop) to a minimum when wrenching on the motor, so the hole locations (including the center hole) had to be within about .030"
Here she is all welded up. Just before I welded it on I figured I should add a grease nipple so I can lube this puppy up. The collar on the front of the tube also got welded on at this point
I then bent up the pin holder, ground the mounting side for a closer fit. At this point I drilled the holes for the pin, then tacked it into place to check the pin in all of the holes… So far, so good.
So it all worked out great and lined up! So I bent the pin, cut it to length and welded washers on it so the spring works.
I took the 3/4" hot rolled round bar and drilled out the center on the lathe for the mounting brackets. You can see the original piece on the left and the 4 drilled ones here
The brackets are done!! Also, you can see the main front plate here. It had to be a bit stronger, so I welded two 1/4 plates together due to availability. They were stitch welded on the outer perimeter along with 2 plug welds in the center so it doesn’t bow. Tapped the holes to 7/16-20 (fine thread) and it’s ready to be welded on the stand.
Here she is!! Ready to be mounted.
I removed the clutch and flywheel from the motor and mounted it all up!!
I am much more comfortable with this stand than I would be with the princess auto $70 deal… all it took was about the same money and a few hours… ok, maybe about 20 in total, but I’m happy… And it was fun. I haven’t done much fabricating in a long time.
The tranny plate will be coming off… It was late and I didn’t realize it was on there until I had it mounted.
Now I can start ripping it apart. All I hope is that the cylinders aren’t scored too badly and the combustion chambers are not melted.
All my years on this forum this is the first build thread that the builder has actually built his own engine stand haha…
dutch ftw?
Feint, I almost cried when I drilled the hole for the cold pipe, so no, I won’t be stitch welding this one. Maybe if it was a dedicated track car, but this thing is my baby.
i will absolutely vouch for this. Not only did i have to be there to see it i also kept the piece and made him sign and date it haha. It may come in handy in the future.
Lookin good theo let me know if you need any help and i would be more than happy to help… friends help friends
Thanks Bobby, will call for sure!
and yeah, Dutch ftmfw!!
Awesome build man! Very good direction!
By the way…Bing has a manifold for the KA??? Verr naiiice, how much?
it had a crack in it.
ya but you can buy 10 of those for the price of one well built one… Im not saying that thats the way to go but its not a huge tragedy to do some spot welds for something that can be replaced easily in the future.
i got one of those and i have had it for 3 or 4 years with no problems so far.
However, the manifold you made is georgeus and i one day would like to own one lol
+1 for weirtec
Wow Theo, that is a really impressive engine stand! Now…if only your KA will be built as nicely…
Well if things dont work out im sure he could just take the easy route and settle with an sr ;]
Good job Theo23, Keep the good work !
I am glad to see another ka-t gt2871 !!! You should get your 300whp goal. I got it with my gt2871r .86 on my stock block
WOW that vette is AMAZING!
Odd, I had no idea you blew the motor either! Good progress so far.
Theo your killing me where are the updates!!!
