L47/Aurora 4.0L powered Fiero.

Hah, mostly joking. But hey, at least there’s a potential ROI there!

Hah! The yellow house with the green metal roof? Yea. That’s my pop’s place.

I’ll let you know if I need to take you up on that…

I must have driven past that house at least 5000 times on my way home and just a few days ago noticed the Fiero. That is my favorite loop in the snow, turn on to March and blast that 90 degree turn completely sideways, take Schreiner and get sideways in the S curves there, and if I’m feeling lucky, do the other 90 degree turn on Beverly. I like the one on March as you can see if anything is coming and use the inside to help rotate the car. The offer stands on the gas and matches.

I love that turn on March, right by Bogtrotter’s. Or rather; my Subaru loves that turn. Little bit of e-brake, clutch down and floor it. It’s pretty much perfection.

Different methods but the end result is the same. I even got my woman rotating her A4 there quite well. Jr was in his rear facing car seat and would go nuts when I rotated the car for him. The S curves on Schreiner are a bit balsy-er than I like-if you come in too hot you get a nice view of your impending doom in the form of 2 giant brick pillars

Jesus Christ finish this thing!! The anticipation is killing me.

Just left the third PepBoys store. Had to go all the way up to NFB to get those gaskets. On my way back to Eden now. Might have her running by midnight?

Drive by my house if you do.

Hah. I bet you’ll know if I do.

So, I got back to the shop around 6P and got to work. It actually took me several hours to finish assembling the motor due to all of the minutia and pressing on pulleys and running to the hardware store for exhaust bolts and other bullshit. My dad also interrupted me to ask if I would help modify his trailer. Spent about 30 minutes welding that up for him.

Anyway, this was at around 9P:

Took about an hour to get here:

And then I spent roughly another hour torquing all of the mounting bolts and connecting all of the hoses. I hooked up the computer and turned the key roughly 40 times to prime the [gigantic] rails. Adjusted it to around 40 pounds and it held. Rad. I’ll fine tune once it’s running and the intake has vacuum.

I would have been ready by 11:30P, but pops came into the shop around 10:30P and asked me not to fire it tonight. Gave me some shit about it rattling his bedroom windows. Whatever. Tomorrow is another day. Just need to re-bleed the brakes, adjust the parking brake, fill/burp the cooling system give her an oil change, then she’s ready for the road.

It’s even kinda purdy.

Well, it works. Took it for a few laps down March to Derby and back up Eden-Evans Center. It held temp just fine and runs freaking amazing. Time for an oil change and some brake re-bleeding and I think she’s done.

Awesome car! Very unique, gotta post a vid to hear how it sounds!

Thanks!

Audio quality is kind of shitty because cell phone, but it gives you an idea.

Just needs a custom plate!

Surprisingly enough, VAG SLYR is available.

Were you running this around Sturgeon Point / Rt 20 on Sunday?

Hah! I’m not sure the ladies appreciate all of the ratty shit and custom work like we do.

Sunday I did a few more of the March to Derby to Eden-Evans Center loops and then right around 9:30P I took her down March, took a right on Derby, took another right on Townline, then came back up Shadagee back to March. I finally aligned the headlights and I wanted to take a night romp. It’s fast and loud, that’s for sure.

My brother has his inspector’s license, but he’s down in Jamestown. I was told I’d get out of work early today so I could take it down there. That didn’t happen. Maybe Friday. I’m a bit nervous to drive it normally with a month+ expired temp inspection. I guess I can wait a bit longer.

Blast 62 all the way to 86 in Kennedy, NY and take that to the Route 60 exit in Jamestown. I’ve done that route a bazillion times and can’t recall seeing any cops. And once you get in Jamestown you’re fine, unless you have a meth lab in the hatch.

After watching the vid I kind of understand why your dad said wait to fire it up until morning.

That was actually my exact plan. The shop he manages is right on the Falconer/Jamestown border, so I usually swing all the way down to Falconer and come back up 2nd Street. I rarely see anybody on that route. I’m not so worried about finding cops on the way to get it inspected as I am just driving around normally. I work roughly 12P-11P tonight, so I’m debating taking it to work. I have a hard time believing a Buffalo officer is going to give a shit about my inspection and it’s tough to see at night, but I could be wrong. Eh, it’s only an inspection [parking] ticket anyway. Dissapears once I actually get it inspected. I’ve only got about ten miles on it after the ‘rebuild’, so I’d like to get some more seat time in it to see how it will behave on a ~60 mile trip to Jimmytown before I commit myself. I’ve got AAA in the event of an issue.

I grew up in Bemus Point and I had a bunch of friends from Jamestown. You ain’t kidding about the meth lab.

Hah, yea. Did I mention it was loud? Even still, though. It’s definitely no louder than a handful of Harleys I’ve heard. I think that if I keep my foot out if it and behave at night; I should be good. If I start to collect noise tickets, I’ll slap a Flowmaster on it or something.

Well, I did it. It’s twenty miles from the shop to work. I definitely tested it out, and it only hit 208°. Normal operating temperature for these motors is 195-210 on the highway and 210-218 or so around town. I think she’s good. I passed three cops, one Hamburg and two Lackawanna; none of them even looked at me. Sweet.

Few issues:

It’s thirsty. The gauge indicated like an 1/8 tank in 20 miles. Tank is probably right around 12 gallons, so that’s like what, ~13 mpg? I think that’s a combination of no ECM-connected O2 sensors and a pretty rich tune. Whatever, at least it runs. Pretty damn well. As long as the cylinders aren’t getting washed down, I’m happy for now. Need to take a look at my wideband and figure out why it’s not working. Could just be a bad sensor. It’s an Innovative unit. I’ll definitely need to think about tuning it after it’s inspected.

I’m having a speedometer issue with the computer and HPTuners support can’t seem to figure it out. They’ve been ‘working’ on it for a few months, now. Even when the VSS isn’t connected the computer is throwing garbage data. It just jumps all over the place at idle, and seems to be a RPM/Final Drive calculation when moving. The speed limiter kicked in on me when I was trying to pass somebody on Rt. 5. I’ve been working with them pretty much all summer on it, but they haven’t responded in a few weeks. I’m not super happy about it. Seriously considering a MicroTech or Haltech, especially if I do end up with a turbo. From what I’ve read about this Shelby operating system, it’s primarily based on a MAF strategy. If I weren’t such a do-it-yourselfer, I’d take it right up to Kennedy and let them have at it.

Still not ready for a can of gasoline and matches yet. Hah.
