Laptop Screen Repair?

Just turned on my laptop and noticed this:

Now it’s several years old but I’d like to keep it for a bit longer. Everything else is fine.

Can I source a screen & replace it myself? Is this easy / hard? Anyone here do this? :gotme:

Depends on the model as far as easy or not. Typically not a horrible job if you’re good with retaining clips and gentle. As for cost…depends on model as well and you have to be precise on the replacement. Ebay usually has cheap LCD panels that work well, I’ve done several side jobs for screen replacements.

^^ eBay has that… but it seems expensive, or am I wrong?

Model = VPCX111KX

Daymn. Yeah it’s an odd sized screen, probably driving the price up being un-common. I recently did a 15" Sony replacement and the screen was under $100.

I don’t even know what would cause it. I didn’t drop it, poke it or hit it. This shit just appeared, lol.

A quick google search and all the replacement LCD’s I saw for that model are $280-350. Yikes. I replaced my 15.4" Dell LCD for $90.

The job itself usually isn’t too bad. The connector is a little fragile and how you actually get to the LCD in the first place can involve some prying but at that cost for just the part I’m not sure I’d bother. Sinking $90 in an old laptop makes a lot more sense than $300.

Yeah, it’s not like it really effects performance. It’s just cosmetic from what I can tell. Maybe I should just ignore it, lol.

I just ruined mine yesterday.
50 dollars for a new screen.
I’m just going to pick up a cheap thinkpad

It’s electronic mold. Submerge the laptop in a 50/50 solution of water and bleach for 15 minutes. Let me know if I can do anything else.

That’s where they get ya… over paying for a screen that costs you 1/3 of the laptops original worth

Could it be the connector cable? I would reseat it just to make sure

lol.
Old man Internet advice ftw.

usually they’re about $50 and 30 mins of work. Nothing crazy. Just be careful. Also make sure you get the correct display type.

Average price for a replacement LCD is about $80, rarely $50. This particular screen I was unable to find for below like $250 due to it’s odd size/connector.
Some of the info here has been lol’worthy.

That’s what you get for buying and 11" laptop.

LOL, no disagreement there. Luckily it’s not mine, I don’t roll with netbooks.

Well after looking around the web for alternative solutions and noticing that the pixel pattern was now slightly different than the picture I posted above, I determined that my pixels are not dead but ‘stuck’ somehow. I started reading this page: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/best-software-solutions-to-fix-a-stuck-pixel-on-your-lcd-monitor/

… and that lead me to try some software which didn’t work HOWEVER another page mentioned that you could tap the pixels with with a stylus (or other tool) and make them change back… and it’s working! I spend about an hour last night tapping pixels and turning them back on. I’m not totally done yet (it’s a very tedious process) but it looks MUCH better than it did before!

Awesome! Think about all those screws you don’t have to match up now.

Haha yeah, I’m just not sure what caused this so I can avoid it later. At least it’s an easy fix!

Wow, thats a whole lot of stuck pixels. Odd it just suddenly failed and is mostly working again.

I know some people have had success with those programs that cycle through colors rapidly, but thats generally on a single pixel. Sometimes it can take hours. This looks something like a manufacturing problem that might be reoccurring.
