back to LEDs…
I am working on a HT video projector that uses LEDs it should be about 1000 lumens. Besides efficiency the main reason LEDS are used is that it replaces a color wheel in a single chip dlp and makes a better image with less artifacts. The unit is also very quiet. We are also talking about making a liquid cooled unit that should be all but silent
well you are wrong in this case. i just want to make sure people have the facts so they can make better decisions and not throw away money.
to be honest, i’m glad you are dropping the cash.
more money = more research, which will hopefully help them figure out the shortcomings and improve the designs.
Ok, I will revisit this on Monday morning. I have a lighting engineer in my office here, In fact he is the president of the local Whatever board lighting engineers belong to. He will be able to shed some light (:sword: I cant believe I said something that corny) on this subject.
i want an underground kit for my house
a what?
Due to the directional nature of their light emission, LEDs potentially have higher application efficiency than other light sources in certain lighting applications. Fluorescent and standard “bulb” shaped incandescent lamps emit light in all directions. Much of the light produced by the lamp is lost within the fixture, reabsorbed by the lamp, or escapes from the fixture in a direction that is not useful for the intended application. For many fixture types, including recessed downlights, troffers, and under-cabinet fixtures, it is not uncommon for 40-50% of the total light output of the lamp(s) to be lost before it exits the fixture.
Quoted from the U.S. Department of Energy website.
I don’t care to argue this since my house doesn’t have a single LED bulb in it anyway. Just sayin.
Not worth it just yet man…
I bought a case of CFL bulbs made by Sylvania on ebay for 20 bucks. I think it was less than a buck a bulb.
They run at 11 watts each.
I switched every bulb in the house, that translated to 10 bucks less per month on the electric bill.
LED is not worth it just yet.
My only gripe with the CFL is that when I put them in the outdoor lamps, they take about 5 minutes to really warm up when it is zero degrees outside.
Other than that they are perfect.
I have some old ass CFL’s in the basement, and they look like total shit, and take forever to warm up, even though it is 60 degrees in my basement, and they emit yellow light.
I also have a LCD TV which saves money over a plasma…
My next move is a 80plus power supply in the computer I am building.
have you actually gotten $10 in savings? or is that just your calculation.
I like CCFL for some things… but the color temp and look is not always as natural.
I have the CCFL’s throughout my house and have no complaints other than how long they take to warm up. I don’t know if it’s the specific bulbs I’m using or what.
Even psychologist tell you flourescent light is bad for your emotions. LED light is closer to sunlight and is actaully used in therapy.
I don’t like CFL for many reasons even if the cost was the exact same as LED.
LED will get much cheaper as time goes on too.
These are sweet because they are small and can go on top of my timbers, etc.

This so funny because someone just mentioned them in a different thread…

I have some of these on top of the timber in my bedroom. It is pretty cool because it totally looks like moonlight…

I have these outside and again they look like moon light. They are not as bright regular spot lights but they are only 4WATTS not 100!!!

Bump.
Price drop 20% and volume discounts available.

I am sure they will get cheaper as people buy more of them.
this is still a better deal http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9855132
lol in my book
I’ve got CFL in every light fixture of the apartment except for the bathroom (as those are extremely short use which CFL is not optimal for.
My electricity usage is around 250 kWh/month in the winter and down around 220 kWh in the summer (due to less use of the stove and oven with grilling). Granted I don’t have my own washer and dryer or a dishwasher, but that is still some seriously low usage. I definitely think I can attribute some of it to lighting.
LED tech is very cool and I like where it’s going, but the cost is still too high right now.
Did anyone happen to catch Glenn Beck cleaning up a CFL according to the guidelines set?(Don’t forget they have mercury in them)
It was pretty funny.
I am not all too concerned. The last time I broke a lightbulb, I was like 10.
And if a grown adult cannot manage to handle a lightbulb without breaking it, they deserve the hassle of cleanup.
Edit - Just watched the video on youtube. What an overdramatic douche.
Ugh, my new fan came with a LED light, I can’t wait to rip it out.
They are just too dim for primary light in most applications.
UPDATED PRICING (basically half)-
