I know you guys aren’t dSLR users but I thought I’d share with you the troubles in my life now.

Well I finally decided that I need to get rid of my kit lens. I now have two options. Buy a zoom or buy a fixed lens. I’m thinking about getting the fixed lens because the pictures will be sharper but I like not having to change my lens out. I already have a 50mm and I’m looking at the Canon 20mm f2.8 or the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8.

They are both around the same price, but I don’t really use any mm in between wide or zoomed in.

Id def take the Sigma 18-50
You got the versatility of the zoom.
the 20 2.8 is pretty dated as per this review

the 18-50 sigma would also be a perfect lens to replace that horrid kit lens. I got rid of that thing as fast as i could.

to bad you didnt want the 70-200 f4
I just sold mine…my new Sigma 70-200 2.8 will be here next week

If you are set on a Prime and want less then 50mm I would say get this

now just so you know the 30mm and the 18-50 are digital lens. Meaning they cannot be used on FF cameras…so they wont work on 5D or any 1D cameras

Thats also another reason why I was leaning towards the 20mm because in the future I can still use it on the 5d later. I want something wider than the 30mm because I usually shoot at 18mm or 55mm. I never really had a problem with my kit lens when I shot weddings. The customers were happy so I didn’t really need to buy a new lens.

then get the 17-40L
cover the range you want nicely.
I would also upgrade that 50 1.8 you have to the 1.4
The quality is much nicer on the 1.4 and it doesnt mis focus as much as the 1.8 does. plus it has USM motor in it.
I hated my 50 1.8 and sold it after a few months

I know what you mean about the mis focus. I had that happen to me a couple of times.

I really didn’t like the zoom of the 17-40 because it was so short and I think its outta my price range.

I say get the sigma 18-50 for now…its a great lens
and if you go 5D. sell it and upgrade to the 50 1.4
because a 28mm on the 1.6 crop camera is basically 50mm. so on FF the 50mm will look about the same as a 30mm on a APS-C sensor
