I tend to agree with you, but not this time around…
You don’t publicly rip food and throw it away in front of a child who did nothing wrong. To a young child, I can see it as a somewhat traumatic event. The school handled this in the worst way possible IMO.
Should they still let kids go on a field trip because the parents forgot to send in the money ?
They just keep blowing it off and pushing their luck until something like this happens
It’s not like they are over due by one lunch. They probably owe for the whole year
Man, I’ve forgotten to update the balance on my kids lunch plan. I just get a note home as a reminder and when I log on I see the balance is negative and I drop another hundro in there.
Definitely seems like they could have handled that a lot better. You’re talking about a lunch that’s a couple bucks not a $100 meal at The Chop House.
a bit off topic but you would be surprised what some of the general public feels entitled to.
during my VERY short stint of working at Geico i would handle calls from the tri-state area which basically 9 out of 10 calls went something like this
-stupid phone intro…how can i help you?
“why did you cancel my insurance?”
-i see we have sent several notices advising that your coverage would be canceled because you have been past due for 3 months
“yeah but now i dont have insurance and my license is suspended”
-correct the policy has been canceled
“but i need insurance! let me talk to your supervisor…”
I hear ya on that, I’m calling some of my own customers on a monthly basis to pay their insurance bills. I usually end up dropping those people since I spend more time chasing their payments than getting new customers.
I guess I just feel like the school should have had a plan in place to prevent this from happening. Was it really that big of a deal that these kids were eating and it couldn’t have been handled without taking their food away? If the parents owe the money, fix the system and prevent them from being able to fall behind or send their bill into collections and collect via wage garnishment if the parents decided not to pay.
i dont think it would be news worthy if they would have just given the children fruit and milk to begin with INSTEAD of making such a fucking absurd scene of giving them lunches then taking them away and throwing them out.
The school screwed up and I think that article is old because they’ve admitted fault.
School didn’t notify all of the parents
Parents of kids who were notified were not given ANY time frame to respond
Some of the parents who WERE notified we actually CURRENT on their payments and the school notified the wrong people
Some kids who had POSITIVE balances on their accounts had their lunches thrown away as well
I’m all for deadbeats being cut off, but the kids had the food in their hands and it was simply thrown away because it couldn’t be given to anyone else. (At least they followed that food service rule, lol.)
Several people at that school need to be fired…
… Oh wait, it’s a public school :silent:

They did. It wasn’t followed and the employee(s) involved were incompetent.
Be interested to see just how far behind these accounts were and if the parents actually got notifications or just ignored them. It’s BS if it was for $5 and they didn’t get any notifications but I can see some parents just ignoring them and letting the balance get fairly negative just because they didn’t think the school should do something like this.
If the system was working correctly then I think this is a good lesson for the kids that if you don’t pay for shit you don’t get something. Of course this ended up teaching them that if you play the victim card then you can get out of it.
Ya fuck that. Hey kid. Your parents didn’t pay the bill so we are taking your food and tossing it in the trash. Furthermore… We will give you milk and fruit. Seems legit lol.
So the food has already been paid for by the school and cannot be returned to “stock” so they throw it out? Anyone else see a problem there?
I’d be pissed if this was in New York State. Specially since I pay school tax and have no children in school. Hmmm… Maybe I should stop paying taxes for a service I’m not using. Oh wait… I can’t.
