M3 Rearend Noise

So the day before my ban I pulled my E36 M3 out of the garage since they were going to begin drywalling the garage. I took it for about a 20 mile drive and it was making a clicking/clanking noise from the rearend. The car is a 5 spd w/ aprox 65K on it, and NEVER beat on. Its been years since I have worked on a rear wheel drive car. What should i do first? dealership or something at home? Anyone ever hear of problems w/ the rearend of these cars, cause I know the E36 318s were whores.

EDIT The noise got a LITTLE better after the 20 miles but now much.

sounds like the read end…

fire some syncro mesh in that shit you will be golden

jack up the ass and run it on stands. see if you can pinpoint where it is coming from. I’ve heard axles go bad that sound like the ring/pinion/diff noise

318’s were a discrace to the whole generation. Please don’t compare the M to the 318. That said, was the noise sounding while in a straight line or while going through a turn? While accelerating? decelerating? going through the gears? What speeds?

it didn’t vary from accel to decel. it would increase its rate of “clicking” with increase in speed. Turnig wasn’t a factor of the noise either.

How long was it sitting since the previous drive? Was the parking brake on? Sounds like a brake rotor click to me. Often happens when a vehicle has been sitting stationary for a while-- especially when the p-brake is left on during that time.
