We have several maple butcher block work tables (from McMaster) some are starting to show their age, since these are solid Maple, can I just sand these down and reseal them? They say they have a “mineral-oil finish”.
i would assume so…as they are wood and anything wood can be sanded and refinish, like maple cabinets?..the oil finish might be a problem sanding? as it will “burn” if you heat it up to much?
Yeah, those are typically solid maple so sanding them should be fine.
another yes
I wouldnt see why not. If your worried do a test spot on the bottom of the work table.
I should add that they are hard maple and will probably take 8 hours to sand the entire surface. lol
Oh yeah, and only sand with the grain.
get yourself a belt sander and you’ll be done in and hour
^Maybe with a floor belt sander but not a hand held one. lol
fuck it, get a saw and lop off the top 1/8" . no burnin
I did consider running them through a planner, too bad I don’t have one that is 36" wide.
uh, kinda
depending on how wide it is you might be able to get it planed.
You mean like an event planner? Yeah, they can’t really help in this situation.
If they are just work tables (no food cutting or prep) you should have no problem. I did this before on an old old butcher block and it worked nice. ALOT of sanding though lol
- cut in half
- plane it
- glue back together
- profit???
If he has several tables it may be worth calling a hardwood floor refinisher.:gotme: They could sand all of them in in just a few minutes. They have these kick ass Hummel German sanders.
Run it through a Timesaver. I think the narrowest they have is 37". Contact the local distributor and see who has one in your area.
