I got a media server setup on my server and updated the PS3 to the latest firmware (2.10) which now supports DIVX. Streaming movies works REALLY well. If anyone is interested in doing so, you need a Windows XP or 2000/2003 computer with a decent processor and a gig of ram.
Download the server (50mb), add your media to the library and enjoy. The PS3 should find it right away. I will test the 360 later on and give my impression of that. So far, it rules!
UPDATE - The Xbox seems to have more compatibility with my movies than the PS3 does. The 360 will also do Xvid with a system update for MPEG4 and AAC. The one thing the PS3 does nicely is auto-size the screen. With the Xbox, I need to manually change the picture size with the TV presets.
The Xbox 360 also buffers video before it starts to play whereas the PS3 is more instantaneous. Mind you, I am not using the Media Extender, just a secondary source under the video section. If I stop a video with the 360, I can resume it right away whereas the PS3, the playback is much more sensitive.
You want to have a decent machine, my server is an Athlon 1.1 with only 512MB of RAM so I would definitely suggest a dual-core or dual-cpu computer as well with a decent disk. The media server will take about 80% usage when you have a movie streaming.
iv got my 160 gb ipod hooked up through my usb port so i can listen to music while playing forza2 and dirt. pretty cool feature that not many people know about. i also just bought the pioneer 600 watt surround sound system made specifically for the 360. the remote works for my tv, xbox and the surround sound. ill post specs later, im off to walmart right now.
A few more observations. The 360 is more likely to crash the media server. The CPU utilization will skyrocket to 80 - 90% when there is an error. I am streaming Final Fantasy 7, Advent Children and there is no CPU utilization. Older codec versions do not work so well. The 360 seems to want to try to play these where the PS3 will outright tell you that it won’t. Newer Xvid codec movies WILL play on the PS3. I would venture to guess anything prior to 2004 is going to give you difficulty if it’s not Divx.
I would also venture to guess that MCE (Media Center Extensions) will work better with the 360 since that is what it is designed for so if you only have a 360, setup a Vista Ultimate computer or a Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. I will update this as I get more familiar with it.
i serve movies through media center, it never once crashed. But im using MCE also. Been doing it for a while now, so much easier to DL a HDDVD movie and just stream it.
Tversity is OpenSauce so it’s going to be buggy. It’s version .9. I want to install the MCE extensions on my Win2k3 server. There is a FAQ for doing it so I will see how that goes.
I would love to see the download stats on your internet connection, Kevin. hahaha.
right now my ps3 recognizes a 1tb hard drive i have hooked up to the laptop. as soon as i hooked it up it recognized it and i was set to go. now i never have to take my cd’s out of my truck ever again. all i have to do is start ripping my bluray audio onto the drive.
yeah I was going to say, I have streamed stuff to my 360…though it was kind of a POS setting up with media center at first because my router didn’t like my xbox
I cant get it to stream smoothly. Its choppy on all video types. Plays for 5 seconds, pauses for 10 secs, over and over. I checked out the support forum and ppl recommended a faster server but CPU, memory, disk, and even network utilization are very low. All under 25% or less. No errors whatsoever.
