Meet my Edelweiss

So when dmoffitt was searching for a new car, I saw how desperate dealers are to make sales, and I saw how many solid 2000-2003 BMWs there were in the 8-11k range. Got me thinking. The Boxster is just a money sieve, and eventually it’s going to be too expensive for me to keep up. The e30 325is is just getting old, and the mileage was beginning to rack up (212k). Why not consolidate down to one vehicle that I can rock summer and winter, daily and track/autocross? Racing is not what I’m trying to do professionally, I just need a casual car to enjoy it in.

Worked all the numbers out and found that I’d come out very nicely on top. So I did it.

Yesterday, I drove 8.5 hours to Kalamazoo, Michigan in the e30, while Dave drove the Boxster.

Lots of Redbull later we made it to Kalamazoo where we picked up this guy Seth, who was buying the e30 from me. Drove over to DeNooyer Chevrolet and completed the sale with Seth before moving on to trading the Box in towards the new car.

I just have to say, the guys at DeNooyer Chevrolet treated me like an absolute VIP customer. I had some serious bank issues (fuck you Key Bank) that almost prevented me from getting the car at all. But Barry and Ray took care of me like I was family, and got it all straightened out. They truly bent over backwards for me, and I will never forget their top notch customer service.

So here’s my new girl, who I’ve named Edelweiss, which basically means nobel white in German. Yes, it’s also a flower, and that song. 2002 325ci, Alpine White on black. Came with the Premium Package (auto rear view mirror, power glass moonroof, wood trim and power front seats with driver memory), Sport Package (front and rear wheels (which are going away because I don’t like them), front and rear tires (which are no longer on the car), and sport seats), 5-speed, xenon headlights with auto levelling, harmon kardon stereo system, clear headlights and taillights, and painted bumper trim which I’m a big fan of.

Some pictures from today, after she had a bath… but then I drove around a lot and she just got all dirty again, lol. I’m not a photographer, nor do I claim to be one. When Dave isn’t off skiing I’ll make him take better pictures.

Overall, the car is in excellent condition, both cosmetically and mechanically. The BMW dealership where I had the PPI done said if I wasn’t buying this car, they would be seriously considering buying it from the other dealer. Taking her by my mechanic this week to have him replace any wear and tear items that are starting to show signs of aging, so that she will be super solid.

oh noes!
No more poorshaa

Nope, no more Porsche. I had to fix that f’ing convertible top 3 times in the two years I had the car. To the sum of over $3000. Not to mention the various other bullshit I had to take care of… coolant tank issues, check engine light issues, etc. I just started dreading the day I would have to pay for actual engine work. It would have put me in some serious debt that I don’t want to be in.

It was the best decision for me, even though I will miss both of my previous cars. Saving at LEAST $400 a month between loan payment and maintenance.

Ah - congrats on the swap(s)!

Shit I had no idea the E30 was for sale… nice pick up Alpine White is a huge

wtf 212k on the box!? Nice Bimmer.

i love it. you’ll enjoy the bmw just fine i’m sure though.

No, on the e30…

No one really did. Seth (the guy I sold it to) knows Dave, and every time Dave and him would talk, Seth would ask if I was selling the e30 yet. So as soon as I was even considering the sale, I touched base with him. He agreed to what I was asking (damn, should have asked more!) and the deal was set.

when people ask me why porsche service contracts cost so much I just laugh at them

Beautiful car. I look forward to picking one up in the not so distant future. Winter driving in it is not as bad as you might think. Keep the stock rims for the winter as opposed to getting a nicer pair of aftermarket shoes dirty. Speaking of aftermarket buy my HP lightnings jk, or am i ;).

Congrats on a great car, and enjoy it. it will truly spoil you.

y no 330?

nice pick up

No joke. I knew when buying the car it was going to be a lot. And it hadn’t quite broken the bank YET. But just looking in the future… it was a 1998 with 92k miles. It was going to need some serious work soon, and I didn’t want to go there.

I looked at 330’s, and I didn’t specifically choose a 325 over a 330. It just came down to which car ended up having the right mileage, the right options, and at the right price - happened to be a 325. It would have been nice to have the extra uumph, but this car is in such great shape, and will still give me a lot of fun

Hardest thing so far has been remembering to turn traction control off. This is my first car that actually has it… I go to pull a sweet drift and my car is like “NO NO NO DANGER YOU ARE IN DANGER” and tries to save me. Then I just end up doing this weird understeer thing and look like an idiot. I need to get in the habit of turning it off FIRST THING - BEFORE the heated seats.

haha yeah I still forget to turn it off all the time and do the same thing

Nah, thats just the lack of power of the 325…

God white BMW’s suck

Side note: Seth better do what he said he was going to do with it…

Looks sharp man good choice!!

And wow 66impalass’s avitar is fucking creapy!!!

Nice car.
The street I used to live on was named Edelweiss.
So are you a Nazi? (Edelweiss = Nazi mountaineers)

ahhh I was looking forward to keeping up with your boxter this summer in my white SHO. nice pickup

oh man so we won’t get to watch any mid 90’s ford tauruses race?

damn.
