memory

i need some new memory since my computer has intermittent bad memory so i want to buy 2 1gb sticks of memory to see where the problem is. does anyone have any recommendations on memory?

this is what i have now

4 sticks of 1gb

i might just buy this again since it is a good price but just seein whats out there

Are you running 64 bit? If not, no use for that extra ram.

I’ve never had a problem with Crucial or Kingston (even the value packs).

u can get same quality for cheaper from tigerdirect

That ram is good…

Or this

Or any corsair. They have some 2x1 kits that are 4-4-4-12 for cheap somewhere on the site… But you need to manually set it to 4-4-4-12 most times.

yes 64bit

hmmm, have you tried to do an RMA for it? I have that same memory and very happy with it.

maybe just pickup some cheapo memory from best buy and return it once you know which stick is bad?

memtestx86 will tell you what’s bad too if I recall

yea i used memtext86 but when i did a scan everything was fine

Did you run the version that runs in DOS?

I believe there is a version that runs in windows, and it cant fully test the mem as some of it is used. And to ensure stability, you need to run it for a day or more, at least 10 passes. On 4gb that can take a while. If it passes that it is stable, and its not the ram.

i think it was the DOS one i ran cause i created a image file and put it on a cd and ran it on start up

i retested the memory waiting for 9 passes and no errors. found this link about increasing the voltage to the mem

http://www.megaszu.com/blog/2007/02/vista-memorymanagement-blue-screen.html

but i did that and i still get the same error so now i dont know

If you made 9 passes, its very likely the memory is good…

Is this a intel rig? It could be the NB is heating from prolonged use and poor air flow, that will lead to massive system instability. The way to test that would be run a program like OCCT or Prime95 in blend mode, tests the CPU at 100% with different fft’s and the mem at the same time. If you make it past a hour its probably fine, but a truly stable system will do 12+ hours.

Any idea what temps the NB runs at? Is the rig overclocked at all? Even at stock clocks, cheap mobos overheat and are not stable.

nothing is overclocked and no i dont know what the temp of the NB is. i cant believe it would be getting that hot i have 5 fans on my case

There is a linux version of memtest86 on the ultimate boot disc, I use that.

Ram is so cheap now its amazing.

i ran prime95 and it ran for 6 min until it found an error. error was

rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4
Hardware Failure detected

WOW…

6 mins? Im impressed you didnt have more problems.

The amount of fans in a case dosent mean much. Download speedfan and figure out what the temp of the NB is under full prime load. Run all cores at 100% under blend, and small fft’s and see which one fails first.

If the small FFT’s fails significantly after the blend mode, or dosent fail after 1H+, and blend does… Its very likely its a memory problem. But thats likely from a crappy or defective mobo, or the NB overheating.

Can you manually set the memory divider in the BIOS? Set it to 1:1. It puts less strain on the NB. Timings are all stock, voltages are all set to AUTO or stock? You can try to add .1v to the mem and see if that helps.

which one is the temp of the NB they all say temp?

i did increase the voltage .1v last night and it still crashed a little while after but has not crashed today yet

edit:
just crashed

Well its probably going to be hard to figgure out then if theyre not labeled stock.

Feel the chipset on the mobo, if you cant touch it its too hot. If its just warm or cold, then you could have other issues. Is the ram hot?

Has it always been doing this?

from hottest to coldest i would say it goes like this

NB > mem (but not by much) > CPU

NB is pretty warm to the touch but not where i cant touch it

yes it has always done this

It could be a bad mobo, or some settings are way off somehow…

Leaning towards bad mobo. Theres far too many variables, a bunch of those are covered now, but if the mobo is under 1yr old and you got it from newegg, they will replace it.

looked over the supported mem of my board again and i may have found they problem…its not supported

i could have sworn it was
