Microsoft Surface

My wife is looking at picking up a Microsoft Surface for work. Wants something easily portable, ability to use MS Word, USB drive, etc…basically looking for the closest tablet that can be used like a laptop. We have an iPad but it has been confiscated by our 3 yr old, lol, plus she tried using it but not very work friendly.

Anyone own or used one? What are your likes/dislikes. The 32GB RT’s have dropped to $349 and they also have the touch or type keyboard that acts as the cover as well.

It’s a meh laptop and a meh tablet

It doesn’t do either great

Macbook Air is probably just as portable and has a full blown OS for productivity. If you’re worried about price, check out Apple’s refurb store.

11" MB Air for $849 http://store.apple.com/us/product/FD711LL/A/refurbished-116-inch-macbook-air-13ghz-dual-core-intel-core-i5

hey, i know you asked about a specific product, but check out this other product that, when refurbished, is $500 more

Tablet != Laptop

I’m not sure what route you are taking here, but the new Lenovo (pc) tablet/convertible products are pretty awesome.

They brought in some demo’s here to work and they are solid, and rather powerful. May be worth checking out.

I do not understand the allure of tablets, at all.

Ya the Yoga products from Lenovo they brought to demo and they are pretty awesome.

I didn’t see that the prices were $349, I thought those things were much more expensive

he said he wanted something that works like a laptop and is super portable.

The M$ Surface IS a laptop once you attach the keyboard. The RTs are decent for consumer models, but for work stuff I’d go with the Pro. The pro runs full Windows 8, but is WAYYYYY too overpriced in my opinion. Also Microsoft doesn’t really allow third party vendors to resell these things. The marketing for them is fucking rediculous.

The Pro and RT are NOT the same

Kind of a decent comparison on the original RT vs. Pro…Now they have the Surface 2 and the Surface 2 Pro

I have this for work:

I must have been thinking of the Pro!

We tried to buy them at work but the Price and limited amount of places you can purchase them from (at least with a purchase order) deterred us away from them. Microsoft is really shitting the bed with these things.

My wife is in court 2-3 times/wk and visiting clients 5 days a week. She is a family therapist and really wants something thin and light to carry, surface is .37 inches and weighs less than 1.5 lbs with an 8-9 hr battery life.

Yes they dropped once the second gen came out, originally was 499 or 549 don’t remember off hand. Not looking to spend 2 1/2 times the cost for the MB Air.
And at the 349 price is comes loaded with the MS Suite (Word, Excel, PPT, etc.).

I have a Lenovo X230 (their professional mobile laptop) for work and love it, will have to check out the Yogas.
Anyone else with suggestions or first hand use of the Surface?

^ 2x for the Lenovo Yoga. Don’t bother looking at the Twist. That thing is garbage and clunky.

I use a x230 at work as well which is very powerful for the work I do. This you already know…

I have nothing to say about the Surface besides I want the Pro.

What’s a tablet?

I took a quick look at the Yoga, looks like the Yoga 11 is the most comparable to the Surface. Both run Win RT and both come preloaded with Office Home. Yoga is $299 and Surface $349, but just read it will be $199 on the MS store for Black Friday. The Surface at 199 sounds like a no brainer but want to hear first hand experience with it. The next Yoga (11S) runs full Win 8 but its $699.

What Yogas have you guys used before?

My yoga pants thing went off :snky:

Definitely need to get an M5, definitely.

Got it. Felt embarrassed asking but now I can feel comfortable in “techy” conversations.
