Miller told to take slogans off helmet Quick has “Support Our Troops” on his helmet
Ryan Miller knows all about rules barring corporate sponsorships at the Olympics.
He also isn’t going to be pushed around.
The U.S. goaltender, a newcomer to the Olympics, went ahead and had “Miller Time” painted on the mask he designed for the Vancouver Games.
“Just having fun,” Miller said with a wink before practice Monday.
The IOC and IIHF don’t see it that way.
IIHF spokesman Szymon Szemberg confirmed Miller and American goalie will be told to take some words off their helmets because they violate IOC rule No. 51 that bars advertising, demonstrations and propaganda. Quick has “Support Our Troops” adorned on his helmet.
“We’re going to meet with USA Hockey (Monday night) to see what their thoughts are,” USOC spokesman Bob Condron said. “We don’t know if it’s a federation or a USOC situation.”
Miller acknowledged being informed “Miller Time” needs to be covered or removed because it’s a slogan for a beer maker.
He shrugs that one off, but is upset that officials are also taking issue with the words “Matt Man” as part of the design. That’s not a slogan but a tribute to Miller’s cousin, Matt Schoals, who died of cancer in 2007.
“My aunt and uncle and my family, it’s important to them, it’s important to me,” said Miller, who has “Matt Man” on his Buffalo Sabres mask. “I’m going to stand up for that.”
I can see “Miller Time” being seen as advertising but they also want him to take off Matt Man which actually has meaning behind it. Fucking stupid imo.
While I agree that the Olympics are supposed to be a level playing field with the worlds “greatest” competing, and all sponsorship should be removed, I still think its shitty that they would want him to take his slogan off… I hope he keeps it on.
removing ALL sponsorship should include the skiers who stand there pointing at the Atomic, Elan, Fischer ect on their skis. i’m sure they paid retail for them…
Does that mean he needs to cover the “RBK” or “Vector” on his pads/stick too…? That’s advertising! They better cover the “Miller” on the back of his Jersey too. Fuck.
I remember Hasek still had Bauer on his helmet when he played in the 98 olympics. Thats why people bought Budweiser Beer…it was a mis-print. It must have been for beer…Srsly. Who would make the association with “Miller Time” if they have never seen any of the ads before? And if they did see the ads then they know about the “Miller Time” anyways.
I hope the announcers don’t accidentally say “just do it” or “I just don’t feel so fresh down there today.”
The Olympics need to have a committee to monitor the stupid shit their committees bitch about to other committees. Then, another committee should review that and report it to the top committee. Then they should go fuck themselves.
Thats what I don’t get at all. We spent hours covering over lenovo logos on PCs because acer was a partner. I guess certian athletes are exempt from the rules.

Could a memorial to a dead person honestly be fit into any of these categories? That’s absolutely retarded if they have him cover it. :tif:
I agree with the Miller time. I do like the Olympics becuase its not corporate bloated with sponsors. Charities and support I don’t see being too bad but I guess I rather them prevent it all together than have to worry about people abusing the system later.
Does he get any money from Miller beer for having it on his helmet? I mean, would they block JayS from having the name on the back of his jersey since it’s the same as a department store? The IOC = buzz killington.
i think its stupid, but i understand where the committe is coming from also
what would everyone think if some team had something like that for a family member but we percieved it as something else? they are just covering their ass’s imo
what we see and think of may be different than the rest of the world…
Miller time is a slogan for a company if he just had miller on the back it would be fine. Like i said I had to tape over several dozen compouter logos because of this BS when I was setting up for the olympics. We had to tape over monitor logos, mice, keyboards. Even the credit card machines that were provided by visa were covered because the verifone logo. They take the sponsorship stuff very seriously. The whole department store that sold official olympic mierchandise downtown vancouver only takes visa. The store is hudson bay, just like macy’s, but for the olympics they cannot take master card for any purchases, not just olympic appearel, just because they have the rights to sell olympic gear.
Seems like the whole city was visa only except for Tim Horton’s… Which by the way large coffee there is the same as a medium here.
Then if that’s the case there should be no logos on EVERYTHING. No logos on skis, boards, jackets, goggles, hockey sticks, gloves, pants, boots, skates, etc. You can’t selectively censor things.
