Clifs: 39 year old man gets caught in a scam where he purchased medals of valor (purple heart, online and wore a marine uniform with said false medals to his 20-year HS reunion.
“The defendant was wearing some of the highest military honors given in this country for valor,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Akrotirianakis, who prosecuted the case. “He never served in the military.”
They could have been replicas as well. I’m not in the military, so I’m not sure, but how often do they come up with a new design? Could they have been old medals from vietnam or wwII? It sickens me that there are so many people that try to take credit for other people’s sacrifices. Its just such a fucked up thing to do.
lol, i knew this kid who broke his ankle skating, and when he went DT and everyone was asking him how he broke his ankle, he said he just got back from serving in Iraq, they sent him home because he broke his ankle. People were buying him drinks left and right.
I LOLED so hard when he told me this.
edit: I say this in no disrespect to anyone who has served in the millitary
That is funny. But if he had say, bought a military uniform, and went out dressed like some war hero and told them that…that is where the line is crossed. Hell, I used the “I didn’t get my car inspected, registration renewed on time etc. because I was in a firefighting accedent and had to have shoulder surgery and couldnt work for a year” excuse to get out of a few tickets, which was true…it did happen…3 years ago lol.
I think its pretty shitty that the govt doesnt keep a list of who they gave what medals to. "Hey thanks for running across an enemy mine field, dodging mortar rounds falling all around you, and taking out 8 machine gun emplacements, heres a medal for your hard work, not that were gonna remember giving it to you in a few years or anything … were not gonna bother to notate why you did or why you got it
i find it REALLY shitty that people run around telling outright lies about their service history, thsi includes:
never leaving US soil yet bragging about going to war
going overseas, but never leaving base, and bragging about all the battles you fought in the tenches
3)never even signing up for the military, yet trying to look like you actually had the balls go to do what those brave men and women ACTUALLY DO
Fuck anyone that doesnt have the balls to sign up for the armed services yet wants to claim all the valor for having served.
and fuck anyone that did sign up, never actually saw combat, but wants tell stories like they liberated an entire country by themselves.
i used to know a Marine that went over to the middle east MONTHS after desert storm ended, he rode around in a humvee and never once actually fired his weapon at any sort of enemy combatant, yet always had stories about all these insane missions he was part of … missions that actually happened long before he ever signed up.
and as for the men & women who earned their medals and later sold them. GOOD. If you need the $ and selling the medal that you EARNED. Earned with your own blood, earned by saving one of your brothers / sisters in the service. Earned by keeping This country free … sell it all, your medals, your uniform, your life story, sell it all. Ill still salute you at the end of the day.
And I’ll still buy you a beer at the bar, because i respect what you DID, weather you still own the medal you earned or not.
im going to say i agree with joe on this… so he wanted to play dressup for a day, look like a hero, and disrespect the US… lets not waste any money on it… i’m sure there could be better places to tie up these funds.
I love when guys come into my bar who don’t know me. They talk all badass about the military. I bait them with a few questions every time to see if they’re legit. The legit ones always get free shots.
The only liars I’ve run into thus far are old drunks that play up stories of what they did in their time. Best by far was the guy saying he was SOF to turn out he was attached to them as a fueler. He got kicked out.
If you took a round or two fighting for your country, you might know the answer.
Soldiers are paid little for the job they do, and the one thing we have, if perverted by every low life that wants attention removes what little pride people have in their uniform.
Every one of my awards has a story behind it. Some are for people dying, some are for friends that didn’t come home, fighting under the flag of this country. They need to be protected as such.
side note:You have to have some nerve to go to your reunion wearing a fake uniform. Hell its kinda tasteless to wear a uniform to a function like that anyways. Its no better than a doctor wearing scrubs to his reuinion.
