I have a 1981 Yamaha XS 650 and was looking at the different registration options.
First, I couldn’t find what the normal price for registration is. But, what I found about registering it as a historic vehicle was:

· If you already have standard motorcycle plates, the fee is $16.50 (an additional prorated registration fee of $6 plus $3 transaction fee plus $7.50 plate fee)

It’s currently not registred but the title is in my name. So if I’m reading that right it’s $16.50 extra to get a historic registration? The insurance is exactly the same, so is there any benefit?

just go to the dmv and find out. calling before you go won’t change the price so if you need it on the road, just go to the dmv and put it on the road.
edit: if you are going to pay cash, then you might need to call first. otherwise, just go to the dmv and get it done.
it was $14 for me to put NY tags on, i think it was $35 for me to tittle from CT to NY but the plates are dirt… fees may have gone up, so i would put two $20 bills in my pocket and still have enough for lunch afterwards.
oh yeah and don’t ever, EVER try calling dmv. You will want to punch babies.
Yeah, I was really trying to avoid calling the DMV, I hardly can find anyone to help when I am there in person. Good, I figured it couldn’t be too expensive. I was just unsure of any benefits to getting a historic registration since I had the choice.
